I need a solution

I am currently running Backup Exec 2012 in a Virtual inveronment, I need expert opinion on my setup environment. My server (Hardware) is NEC Express5800 series, i installed VMware Esx Version 5 on it then created a vertual machine and then installed win server 2008 R2 and in this server i have my Backup Exec 2012.

It this the best inveronment to use backup exec 2012 or should i install backup Exec directly on the hardware.

Monitoring Backup Exec

I need a solution

Due to the idiosyncrasies of Backup Exec 2012, my daily backup run consists of twelve jobs: seven scheduled ones and five linked duplication jobs. Any of these can produce one of several results:

  • completed successfully
  • completed with inconsequential warnings (eg. "new VM added")
  • completed with warnings that require action (eg. GRT failure)
  • completed with inconsequential errors (eg. tried to back up non-existent file)
  • completed with errors that require action (eg. the various internal errors BE occasionally emits)
  • waiting for operator intervention
  • hanging for no apparent reason
  • never started

I need a way to inform my operators whether last night's run completed successfully or any intervention is necessary. Right now they have to connect to the media server every morning, fire up the Backup Exec console, go through the job log checking off all the jobs that did complete, and then click through all the jobs that didn't complete to check whether they started and in which state they are.

Is there a better way?

I need a solution

Hi,

Following were the infra details:-

1. VMware ESXi (2 no.)

2. VCenter.

3. VMotion is enabled.

4. four no. of VM for SAP and database is DB2 which is running on RHEL6.5

5. one VM for Zimbra.

We have made the solution using BE 2012 for taking backup of all the VMs along with the GRT.

Now, please , help with the following queries:-

a. For VM backup 2 no. of VMware host licesne will work?

b. A windows agent license for VCenter.

c. For GRT which agent is required for DB2 database's file restoration?

d. For the VM where Zimbra is situated, which agent is required for GRT restoration.

Any other requirement for technical point of view.

Thanks.

A client has a RAID array going south.  I do not want to replace a drive before I have BE 9.1 in case the array will not restart.   I no longer have a copy to install if the Array crashes before repair.  Can anyone supply a copy of the complete install.  The system is running BE 9.1 and has complete backups available....

Incrementals cause issues with Fulls

I need a solution

We have an interesting issue. Friday rolls around and we make sure things look good (Full to NAS, then to USB) for the Full backups over the weekend. All is good. Monday rolls around and things look good. Tuesday comes and the Incremental runs to a NAS, then to USB. When next Fulls on Friday rolls in, the NAS to USB fails. The Incrementals apparently cause the USB drive to go offline for the Fulls.

The backup-to-disk device is offline.

This is typically caused by the folder becoming inaccessible due to it being deleted, renamed, or unshared. It may also be caused by a disk full condition. The folder state has been set to offline. Please attend to this condition. Additional detail may be found in the Event Viewer - Application Log.

What I did was remove the USB drive folder from the pool, then add it back by dragging and dropping the folder into the pool. Fulls were happy, until the next Incremental runs.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Thanks

Job completed with exceptions -- How do you include SQL transaction logs in the backup using Backup Exec 2012?

I need a solution

Hello,

I client of mine is using Backup Exec 2012. Their backups are completing successfully (for the most part, some intermittent failures), but they receive the following message after each backup:

The job completed successfully. However, the following conditions were encountered: Job Completed with Exceptions

We never received this message when we originally installed the product. These messages began maybe 6 months later. I originally thought the 'Exceptions' indicated that not all drives/folders/files were included in the backup, but i have come to find out that the 'Exceptions' are actually the SQL transaction logs that are not being included.

We used to have it set up to run a full backup once a week and incremental backups for the other days. The incremental backups were failing consistently stating:

The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec SQL Agent was not used to create the last full, differential, or log backup of this database. You must use the SQL Agent to run a full backup before you can run a differential backup or transaction log backup.

**Note** -- even though they receive the failure notification, when I check the backup destination, I see backup files that were being produced daily. We have since swithced over to full backups daily to get rid of the failures, but still receive the 'exceptions'.

From what I read online, the full backup should automatically include the SQL transaction logs (the SQL instances are selected as part of the backup). So, here are my questions:

1. Are the SQL transaction logs automatically included in a full backup?

2. If so, Why do the incremental backups keep failing with the message given above?

3. If not, How do I use the Backup Exec SQL Agent to run the full backup? I have not seen anything resembling it in the user interface.

Thank you for reading this, and any help is appreciated!

Major MS Exchange issue. Need to ensure a good backup is peformed

I need a solution

We had a major 2007 Exchange issue.  One of our CCR nodes failed, and now we are running the Cluster with only one node.

Therefore we are having an issue with Truncation of the log files.

This coming weekend we hope to bring up the node, and get the cluster back online.  However before we do so we want to make sure our backup is good.

Currently we Backup Exec 12.5 do a full backup every night of the Information Stores, but not the log files.  Are those log file folder necessary to backup incase we have a major failure and need to restore from tape?

We have another system doing the system state backup.

See screen capture below to see our selection list.

Thanks for the help!

I need a solution

Hello friends,
The embedded database in my Backup Exec 2012 sp4 solution has been filled and can not perform any action as a backup, restore or add tasks, pretended to debug the DB or connect to another DB instance in SQL Server 2008 R2
which is the best option.

Waiting for your comments.

BackUp Exec 2012 - tape/slots which tape takes precedence

I need a solution

I'm running Backup Exec 2012. My system is set to run a full backup (Fridays) and incremental (Mon-Thurs)

I am under the impression that when you have many overwritable tapes is the drive, the system will first look for tapes that has matching media set, and ifthere isn't any, it will look for scratch media. When it looks for scratch media, it will look for the one with the oldest date in "Allocated Date".

Am I right on this?

But on a few ocassions it has not followed this "rule".

I'm attaching a screencap of my backup from last night. As you can see from the Allocated date, on Monday I scratched and labelled all tapes in order from Slot 1 to 5. I did this so that the allocation date will be in sequence. But somehow yesterday (Tuesday) it skipped the oldest allocated tape and took the second oldest tape.

Any idea why?

Dear All,

I'm a new to Symantec BackupExec user and I  wounder if some one could help me to fix the problem.

I've followed the complete instructions provided by symantec online documentation. The agent was installed correctly on the Linux server( CentOS) and has been added to the media server( Windows 2008 R2). The browser fails as soon as the firewall is turned on the Linux server, I've configured the IPTables between Linux and Media servers to allow all ports but I'm not sure what is causing the problem.

Any help pl.

Backup exec. restore issues

I need a solution

The client I was working with yesterday has the latest greatest backup exec. (2012) and the latest greatest symantec endpoint progection 12.1.4013.

I needed to do a restore of a inetpub folder yesterday.

It would not start would give a communication error pretty quickly.

So I disabled the anti-virus on the target system.

The backup would then start and get going for about 5 min. and come to a stop.

The anti-virus still said disabled but I didn't think that was the case.

Cancelled the job then did a re-enalbe and disable of the anti-virus again and again it would start but get so far and stop.

We then ran clean wipe and uninstalled the anti-virus on the target box and removed AV.

The restore then ran no problem.

So do I need a exception of some kind setup?

Seems weird that I can't do a restore with AV still on ?

Thanks

Mike

Backup to disk to disk solution over a WAN

I need a solution

I have a remote site which is not manned but requires regular backups. I am planning to implement a Backup Exec 2014 server with a deduplicate storage disk where I will run daily backups and then run a duplicate job to backup to a remote Backup Exec server over the WAN in our main office.  This server (office server) will also have a deduplicate disk to where the backups will be replicated to and I will then run another duplicate job against that to tape.

I want to know if I can do this without the CASO option or is this a requirement for duplicating deduplicated backup sets?  If anyone has any advice regarding this, Backup Exec versions, options, agents, etc that would be great and also any other advice generally related to this implementation.

Thanks

Chris

"(Unknown media)" when rotating tapes

I need a solution

I have a Tandberg LTO6 autoloader & BE2012 that I support at one site, and an Overland LTO6 autoloader & BE15 at another. All tapes at both sites are bar-coded.

At the Tandberg/BE2012 site, when I rotate previously used, but now overwritable, tapes into the slots and do a Scan from BE, the tapes are shown with their correct labels and are recognized.

At the Overland/BE15 site, when I do the same thing, the tapes that I've just loaded show the correct Barcode and Media Label, and all other columns for that matter. But in the Description column, it shows "(Unknown media)". If I inventory those slots, (or just let BE choose those tapes for a backup) the "(Unknown media)" designation goes away.

There's no practical difference, so this is really just curiosity, but why are tapes at the Tandberg/BE2012 site recognized correctly, and those at the Overland/BE15 site "unknown" until I inventory or reuse them? Is it an Option setting? Difference between BE2012 and BE15 media management? Autoloader hardware difference?
