creating duplicate to tape with data domain

I need a solution

Hi

We have recently purchased some data domain boxes but no proper thought has gone behind the design of backup exec environment and I've been handed the job after the decisions to buy have een made.

Currently we have standalone backup exec servers (windows 2008 servers and BUE 2012) at all our remote sites which backup to local tape devices.  We will replace tape devices at all remote sites with a data domain box.

Backups will be written to a CIFS share on the dd box and then replicated to a central dd box in our main site.

We want to be able to write monthly full backups to tape at our central site from the replicated copy.

The remote backup exec servers cannot see the tape device at our central site.

The question we have is do we need to redesign our environemnt - i.e. move to a CASO environment to be able to drive the duplicate to tape from a backup exec server at our central site (central master server with several remote media/slave servers).

Any simple advise greatly appreciated.

cheers

I need a solution

One of my Win7 Workstations fail to install the remote agent.

It does not install by push-install from the BE Server (BE2010R3, all updates applied) and also it does not install after copying the files to a local folder on the Win7-machine

The error message after the push-install is as follows ...

Symantec Backup Exec Remote Agent (TM) 13 Installation Log

04-18-2014,11:56:36 : REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=emus REBOOT=ReallySuppress PATCH=C:\BEW-526822dab18047e4934616e5810f0fe7\VxPushRA\RAWSx64\Updates\RAWSX645204RSP4.msp
04-18-2014,11:56:36 : Unable to reopen MSI package C:\Windows\Installer\641a769.msi

Trying to install locally, I see only the empty progress bars, but it never finishes, so I don#T get any error messages.

I need a solution

Hi Community,

I am facing this issue with Symantec Backup Exec 12.5, highly appreciated your help.

Information system:

-Windows Server 2008 R2 STD SP1

-Symantec Backup Exec version 12.5.2213

-Backup to tape HP Ultrium 5-SCSI Z64B to tape library: Fujitsu Eternus LT S2 2.03

After finish the installation, in Devices tab, it shows nothing in Robotic Libraries, instead of Fujitsu Eternus LT S2 2.03.

I already checked Device Manager of server, it regconized Fujitsu Eternus Media Changer in the Media Changer Devices (as attached picture).

Environment check of Symantec show this content: It failed at Tape Device Information. Device Changer is not supported (as attached picture).

This Fujitsu Eternus LT had been updated Library firmware (2.03) and Drive firmware (Z64B).

Anyone here have any advice or support me solve this Device Changer issue? Thank you very much.

NghiTD

Getting the below error,

V-79-57344-34070 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "<<path>>:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

When we checked at the backup destination of the CPS tool, it doesn't show up anyhing. May be the snapshots are deleted or being moved.

In the selection list of backup exec, Continious Protection Server is checked, but there is nothing inside it(Usually some Database and other few files should be there).

Any suggestions for it.

I need a solution

Hi there,

I am planning to have a Quantum Superloader 3 installed at our office. I have a question on the operational side.

Can I assign different tapes to different jobs that would run on the same day.

I need to segregate the data on the tapes: i.e. tape 1 - for job 1 - for server 1, tape 2 - job 2 - for server 2, etc. The loader should remove tape 1 and load tape 2 for job 2 etc.

Your feedback is appreciated,

Thank you,

Manfred

Backup Exec Exchange Backups

I need a solution

Well, recently I have been trying to run daily EX01 backups (Exchange backups) and it has been failing. The daily backups are failing whenever Microsoft Information Store is selected, and causes peoples Outlook profiles to freeze up since it's trying to backup data and clog up the network. I have been attempting to troubleshoot using multiple threads via forums and other web sites, but no joy. Any suggestions would be appreciated? Below is what I have tried, and nothing has helped...

** I am running Windows Server 2003, and running Backup Exec 2010 R3.

  • I've ran 'vssadmin list writers/providers' and everything comes out to be stable and no errors
  • I've disabled circular logging since that was primarily one of the issues that was noticed
  • I've tried using different settings in AOFO (Advanced Open File Option) and no joy on that either
  • I've ran backups without the Microsoft Information Store selected, and they were successful.
  • I've restarted the server, and services and verified that credentials were valid.

The error that I usually pick up on is 'The VSS Writer has failed, but can be retried'...now, I have read many threads or discussions regarding to this error, but none of them have helped so far. Any further information can be provided if asked. I would like to repair my backups incase of a casualty occuring, and clearly I cannot figure out the solution to my issue.

Thank you,

Patrick Nogaj

BE to QNAP slow

I need a solution

I've setup the iSCSI Initiator and all seems fine and looked great even the tests went well. Come in and see it has backed up 400GB of 2TB in 82 hours at 221 MB/min. (deep breath and sigh)

I do know our system has 8GB memory and is currently using abour 4GB so that seems fine. It appears our incremental ran successfully, but with a different setup and destination than the QNAP. I looked at our WMware Data Recovery screen and it shows it is doing an integrity check. Could either or both of these cause this issue?

Offsite Job

I need a solution

Hi,

When running an offsite job, the job is cancelling automatically with the following error:

The job was canceled because the response to a media request alert was Cancel, or because the alert was configured to automatically respond with Cancel, or because the Backup Exec Job Engine service was stopped.

The Backup Exec job Engine service was not stopped so for sure the reason is not the BE engine service.

Any help??

SDR recovery from duplicate tape jobs, or linked tape job

$

I need a solution

Hello

So it seems the BE 2012 lacks the ability to easily restore from duplicate tape jobs or linked tape jobs.

With linked tape jobs(duplicate to tape is the last stage of the jobs) the catalogue files in the .dr file for the recovery are only seen 1 week after, as the .dr file is made at the end of the full job vs the last stage of the job.

So for example:

After the full backup and with the linked duplicate stage completing, SDR only shows the orignal backup but not the duplicate. When inserting the SDR disk next week I am able to see the duplicate tape backup for previous week and orignal backup for current week.

Obviously, this is not acceptible.

If i need to use tapes that are offsite on the chance that our main disk storage is destroyed and BE server is also destroyed, i can only recover last weeks info using sdr. If BE is online, this is no issue as BE will have the current catalogue info needed.

We also have a job that duplicates 4 servers files to a single tape for off-site storage. This situation is worse, as no previous or current week catalogues are ever seen for this job in the sdr menu.

I have been attempting a work around but need a little assistance. My ideology is that since the duplicate jobs maintain the original .bkf file names, i should be able to use the full job's sdr catalogues and just point to the tape.

Yesterday I managed to do a sdr recover job by manually copying the .bkf's that were related to my chosen time stamp to an external hdd.(This was meant to mimic, the flat .bkf files that would be on a duplicate tape job.)

As the duplicate tape jobs don’t create a tiem accurate .dr file, I copied the .dr file from the full job(source of duplicate job) onto a usb key and used this.

The sdr recover job worked well, just a few issues / questions.

When sdr attempted to look for the .bkf's it gave an error of :

"XXX:\XXX\ is not a valid disk cartridge device. Select a valid disk cartridge device" when trying to select the backup sets from Disk Storage."

I was able to solve this by putting the .bkf’s in a BEData folder on my ext hdd, with a copied Changer.cfg and folder.cfg from the main disk storage.

I also had to put a BEControl folder with the BESCF file in it, before the error would clear and I could continue with my restore.

So my question is. What specifically is in the changer, folder and BESCF files? I need to know this too know if I can use an older version of these files for the restore, or if these config files must always be new and fresh(most current). I can always make a copy for offsite to be included with the sdr boot disk I make.

Secondly, would the sdr be able to read .bkfs that were compressed, either when put onto tape(if reading again from tape for restore), or when the actual .bkf files were made??

Thirdly, and this relates to the first point, do the duplicate tape jobs populate the tape with the changer.cfg, folder.cfg and BEControl foldersand therefore I don’t need to worry about question 1??

Thanks for the help and reading this quite long post :))

Hopefully the answers will help others as well. I realize many people make backups and blindly trust that they will work in a restore job.......

Catalog location change

I need a solution

I changed the location of where my catalog files are created. (I did this to troubleshoot other errors on cataloging tapes)

So the origianl location was location 1. And the new location is location 2.

Prior to moving the storage location of catalog files, I was able to go into 'job restore' and see the available dates by resource for every day in March. However,  since I have created a new file location, copied the catalogs files from location 1 into location 2, and then restarted the BExec services, I only see 1 day available to restore in March.

Why might this be?

Full backup not backing up "everything".

I need a solution

On my BExec 2010 server, I have created a "Full" backup job that backs up the "RemoteInstall" folder on our Windows Deployment Server 1x per month.

When I checked to see what was available for 'restore', it ONLY has the immediate sub-folders under "RemoteInstall"available.

Problem

The image files I need to have backed up are 2 folders deep. EG "c:\RemoteInstall\Images\Images to be used". And restating the issue for clarity, it is NOT backing up the folder(s) under C:\RemoteInstall\Images. These folders contain my image files (they have a .wim and .rwm file extension).

Thanks!

Overview of our setup...

I need a solution

Here's what our setup looks like now.

  • Backup Exec will do a full backup of each server to a QNAP starting Friday night at 10pm.
  • When it is finished, it will start on the next server and so on.
  • When all are done (a total of ~2TB), a duplicate job will start Sunday night at 10pm to copy all of the server backups to the external USB (2.0) attached to the QNAP.
  • Each night (Mon-Thurs) incremental backups will run at 10pm and when finished copy the backups to the external USB.

After some testing, this looks like it should work. Is there anything else I should check? Thanks

Backup Exec SDR - Needed for every backup?

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a physical server (Windows 2008 R2 SP1) which I installed the RAWS agent on to and performed a full backup with everything selected.

The SDR icon was green.

Once this was done I got an alert saying to configure secondary alternate storage for the SDR data which I did.

I then decided to run another backup but this time I setup several file type exclusions.

The SDR icon was grey this time.

When it comes to using SDR would I be able to do a full restore from the backup I took which had exclusions, or would SDR only allow a restore from the full non exclusion based backup?

Thanks
