Windows 2008 R2 SP1

BE 2012 SP1a ( CASO)

CPU : Quad Core

Ram :50 GB

Deduplication folder size : 30 TB

Windows 2008 R2 SP1

BE 2012 SP1a - Media server

CPU: Quad Core

Ram :50 GB

Deduplication folder size : 30 TB

When there are 6 concurrent backup running on the CASO on the Vmware virtual machines backup the memory usage will reached 100% and backup jobs will failed or backup server hanged. While backup of from the BE media server with 6 concurrent job on physical server via BE agent dont have this issue.

We have also disable the antivirus from scanning the BE processess , MS SQL databases and deduplication folder mount point based on symantec best practise.

Below are the technote that is related to my issue without any resolution yet other that restart BE server services after a few backup .

Beserver.exe is using up all available RAM(Memory) until the service is restarted in Backup Exec 2012
This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 2012 Service Pack 1a. (TECH186717)

Best Practices for System State Backup

I need a solution

I have 51 servers in one environment that needs the System State backed up. Our current backup process does a disk to disk copy to a central location and then backs up to tape. We start this backup two hours before other backups kick off to try to get it to finish. However, the disk to disk portion takes on average 13 hours to run and the disk to tape portion never finishes Monday through Thursday because we need to put that night's tapes in. This is about 315 GB of data.

My question would be how can I get the system state to backup successfully every night. We have the previous days System States backed up to disk, but our boss would like it on tape just in case we have corruption of data, we can restore from tape.

Please let me know any ideas that can imporve our system state backups.

Thanks.

Restore Expired media

I need a solution

I just want to confirm that if I have a full backup done on 12/1 and I hold it out so it doesn't get overwritten, then once it expires on 2/1 that I can still restore from it like a month later. I beleive I have to re-scan it, right? or re-catalog it? Or is it even possible?

Hi,

Im using Backup Exec 2010 R3.  I have not seen a single relevant thread referring to excluding Exchange 2010 "deleted items" folder from a DAG backup job.

Please dont post solutions for previous versions.  I was able to do this in the old days with BE 11 and Exchange 2003.

What happened?  Why isnt there any documentation??

Thank you

Restore System State SBS 2011

I need a solution

Hello,

after a SAN-failure we have to restore a SBS 2011 from backup. We´ve got all Data, Exchange-DBs and the system state on tape, but i´m not able to restore the system state back into my newly installed SBS 2011. Because i don´t have a .dr-file, i have to restore everything manually. Is the recovery path the same like restoring a single Server 2008 R2 DC? When i Restore the system state in Directory Service Recovery Mode, BE recovers everything until 100% and shows then the error  0x2000fe07 - FS_NO_MORE Important thing is, that the SBS is running under VMWare.

Do you have any hints for me, please??

THANKS!!

LiveUpdate Stopped Working

I need a solution

When I attempt to run LiveUpdate on either of my 2 media servers, I get an LU1835 error indicating it can't connect to the Live Update servers.

Googling this issue reveals it to be either a problem with a firewall or a the account running the update.

The firewall is a domain managed firewall that has not been modified since Live Update last worked.

The account being used to run the updater is the same one that has always worked in the past and the permissions have not changed.

One media server is running Windows 2008 R2 and the other is running Windows Server 2003.  Both are fully patched.

Thanks in advance for suggested fixes.

Why is the Full Job Rate slower than the Incremental Job Rate?

I need a solution

A co-worker just brought to my attention that the job rate for Full Backup Jobs is much slower than that of our incremental jobs. I was wondering why that is? Is there something by design that will allow for an Inc job to have a Job Rate that is about double that of the full jobs?

How to create continuous backup with BE 2012?

How to create hot backup with BE 2012? say 'continuous' I mean when the full backup of endpoint PC is done and then there are some some changes to file(s) has been made - they're automatically added to the backup. Or file share backup with the same scenario.

Was this functionality available in Continuous Protection Server? Is it available in BE 2012? I'm confused.

Dear all,

Here is the case:

Weekly job A / Weekly job B

Media Set to 1 Week overwrite and infinite append

5 tapes in the pool

Weekly job A set to run with overwrite tape option, as Weekly job B set to run with append option. However Weekly job B never pick up the tapes which job A left, there is still pently of space to use, job B will just pick an overwritable tape to start, did I miss anything? Please advise.

Superseding jobs not working as expected

I need a solution

I created a job with the following schedule:

- daily full backup @ 1pm every week day
- weekly full backup @ 1pm every Friday
- monthly full backup @ 1 pm every last workday of the month

Whenever the last working day is a Friday the schedule operates as expected: the monthly backup runs. The weekly & daily backups are superseded.
However when the last working day is not a Friday the scheduler tries to run both the daily and the monthly backup. I expect it to run the monthly backup and supersede the daily backup.
Am I missing something here?

Problem with catalogs migration

I need a solution

Hello,

i'm facing a strange issue, i followed the Symantec procedure but unfortunately i have a problem with my catalogs.

I am out of space on my C disk, so i start the BEUTILITY to change the catalogs path to a new disk. Everything gones fine, then i restart my BE services. I change the configuration of BE2012 to specify the new location, and i restart the server.

Now i have to issues:

1) When i want to restore, BE is unable to see backup sets previous 7 days, instead of before i was able to restore for months

2) Today, after night backups run, i can see that my catalog folder on C is not empty, as if the new backups write their catalogs in the old folder.

Please help, because the only "bad" trick i have in mind is to create shorlink in my old folder catalog

Virtual machine servers appear after VMware vSphere backup

I need a solution

Dear ALL.

I have a simple question.

I took a test backup (with default settings) of one virtual machine on my ESXi.

When it finished I recieve a message like:

V-79-57344-38726 - Backup Exec failed to connect to virtual machine 'My machine' and was unable to collect the necessary metadata to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup. You must install the Agent for Windows and the virtual machine tools provided by your host software on the virtual machine.

I understand what it mean that I have to install BE-agent to the guest OS and I'll do it. But why this server appears in list of servers?:

System State Restore

I need a solution

I have a Windows 2003 Virtual Machine that we back up the System State every night. My boss wanted to restore the System State from September to the particular server today in order to fix a problem that did not exist previous to November. The restore from Backup Exec 2010 R3 completed successfully and Backup Exec said to complete the restore, reboot the server. We rebooted the server and now it blue screens with a stop 0X0000007B. We restored the machine from a snapshot we took before the restore. Since it is a VM, we did not add any new hardware. This machine is not a DC.

Please let me know what needs to be done to restore the System State of a server.

Job rate dropped dramatically on same backup job config but on virtual machine.

To all,

I have BE 2010 R2. On a phyiscal old file server, the backup job rate is 1804MB/min for 660GB in backup size. The job takes 7 to 8 hours to complete to tapes. It's acceptable to us. I then created a new virtual machine on VMware as our new file server and installed the backup agent in OS. I copied the files over to the new server, less than 400GB, however, same backup job to tape, it takes about 12 hours at a job rate of 560 MB/min.

Looks like the backup job on VM runs slower than on physical server. Is it normal? Anything I need to tweak on the backup job.

Please advise

Thanks
Calvin

Hallo zusammen,

Exceptions on SBS 2011 Backup Jobs

I need a solution

I keep getting this exception on my server's full/incremental job pair:

V-79-57344-33925 - Error: ShareWebDb.mdf is a component of a SharePoint server farm. It must be backed up using the Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. Select it for backup from the Microsoft Server SharePoint Server Farms node.

I have a Farm job, runs fine.
I do have a support case with Symantec Tech Support, but so far they are dodging the real issue and feeding me busy work.

Months ago when I installed this box, I moved the SharePoint databases and such using the SBS Console, to the "D:" data volume.. among other file shares and such.

Beginning 12/14, the Full job (on Fridays..) threw this exception.  That is thrown, as is every DB and log file for SharePoint for CompanyWeb.. which comes with SBS.

The first suggestion by support is to feed them version info and ensure my LiveUpdate is up to date.  It is.

The second suggestion was that I should exclude the SharePoint Resources and corresponding SQL instances/dbs from my main job's backup selections.. they already were.  Any SQL on this SBS box I don't care about.. my LoB server hosting an ERP product, I do care about.. not an issue to exclude all of it.

The third suggestion was that I should exclude the LDF/MDF pairs from the backup selection.

Okay.. but that turns off SDR.  YES, they are on D:, not C:.

As an MSP, I have multiple clients and multiple cases of this problem.  Some clients, I have gone so far as uninstall SP from SBS.. a different side-effect which makes SBS cry, but not Symantec's problem I guess.

First problem.. why aren't any of the kb articles current with Backup Exec 2012 issues? Every situation I encounter has articles about former versions.. including the "updated" articles.

Second problem.. As mentioned, this is one among at least six clients with this issue.  We using a monitoring/management system and agent.. I really want these backups to SUCCEED.. else I am looking at them daily.. so saying "meh, you know it's alright, deal with it" is not a solution.  We are looking at other backup solutions at this point.. we already abandoned Endpoint Protection about two years ago.

While I wait for the next busywork request from Support, anybody got the fix?

Hi,

We have a Exchange server where we Installed Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery on the same. We are getting this error frequently . Any idea is appreciated One concern can we install Backup exec and Backup exec system recovery on same server. Backup exec job is failure and BESR is success. The Symatec Backup exec error is

Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "Microsoft Information Store". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
VSS Snapshot error. A Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot is already running on the target computer. Only one snapshot can run at a time.  Try running the job later

And in the windows event viewer I get

An attempt to open the file " for read only access failed with system error The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another processThe open file operation will fail with error -1032

Thanks.

Duplicate tape - Diff only then full only on wkend

I need a solution

Coming from years of Retrospect, and getting lost in my dup to tape stage with BE2012.  I want to make full backup to disk every Friday and dup that to tape.   I want to make differential backup to disk every M-R (saving last 4 days so I always have multiple diff copies) and duplicate only the day's differential to the days tape.

Here is what I want on site

1) Disk copy of last 4 Friday FULL backups (so, 4 separate FULL backups)

2) Disk copy of Monday differential, Tues differential, Wed differential, Thursday differential.

Here is what I want sitting in a warm, dry, place offsite

1) Friday tape (actually I rotate these so I have 4 different ones: 1st Friday of this month, 2nd Friday, etc)  - ONE full backup on each tape from that same day.

2) tape for Monday with differential ONLY that was just run on Monday.    Tuesday tape with Tuesday's diff to disk,  Wed tape, Thursday tape  (so these tapes are pretty short).   I could live with these being one Friday plus the daily differential, but tape is too small for every darn thing that is on disk.

First part is pretty easy, but how in the world do I get part 2 w/BE?   Suggestions?  Am I missing something obvious?   In the past, this strategy has worked well for me (backups finish in reasonable time, and I have multiple full sources plus multiple diff if I ever need a bare metal restore).

Backup Exec 2012 Restore System State on Domain Controller

I need a solution

I'm in the middle of a recovery and used SDR to get me up to a certain point, but now I need to restore the system state from a non-SDR backup that occured later.

I boot to Directory Services Restore Mode but all my restore jobs fail because of account login issues. I came across articles that suggested changing all the services to Local System Account, but that doesn't resolve the issue. I see that under Login Accounts Backup Exec is configured to use a Domain account that obviously can't be authenticated in DSRM mode.

How and the heck to you restore System State with Backup Exec 2012?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!
