Normally when I install a backup solution, I spec BUE software tied to a DLT tape drive.  My customers have data that if lost, will destroy the business, so I specify commercial, heavy duty backup solutions.  BUE works great with DLT tape drives.

I took over an account that was using the Windows backup software, coupled to external, USB drives.  Since the Windows software was garbage, I bought a copy of Backup Exec 2012, and set it up to backup to the three external drives that the customer cycled through the server.

After a slew of problems, I discovered that BUE 2012 will not work with USB external drives.  Therefore I have two questions.

1.  The customer will not spring for a $2500 DLT drive.  They want something cheap like the external drives that they are using.  Is there a device that can hold 500 gig or so, can be removed from the facility, works with BUE, can easily be disconnected from the server, and doesn't cost much?

2.  I thought about using BUE to back up the files to an internal drive in the server, and then write a copy script that copies the internal hard drive to the USB drive that happens to be connected that particular day.  The problem is that this institutes a second piece of software into the backup mix, and it's not easy to see in the Backup Exec GUI that the copied files on the USB drive are exactly the same as the ones created by BUE.

Can people post some ideas on what they might do?  The previous consultant installed a whole pile of home networking-grade garbage in the office.  I'm trying to upgrade stuff little by little, but I can't sell a DLT drive at this point in the game.  The device also has to be portable enough  so that the office staffers can take the device off site.

Now I setup my back up schedule like this 

 

 

This is the first time I run this schedule

Daily backup in Mon,Tu,Wed,Thu,friday at 11:00Pm - 11h59Pm start 4/11

Weekly backup in Friday night 11:00 Pm - 11h59 PM start 9/11

Monthly backup in Sat night 11:00 Pm - 11h59 Pm start 1/12

 

I dont know why my schedule got this error. Please explain for me and give me the solution.

i am very frustrated about copy-option is not present in BE2012. as i know not only exchange not supported copy-only, but not SQL, files too.

- i have one media set "daily" for daily backup (overwrite period 5 weeks - every day incremental, on saturday full).

- on last day of month i do full backup to media set "monthly" (do not allow overwrite, append 10 days), after this 10 days we put tape off site

- in the middle of mont i making one tape wich is taking off site to other location. media set "bank" (overwrite period 6 weaks)

i have around 15 servers for backup.can someone tell me any advise how to work with this without copy-only option?

for to be clear about problem:

on sataday i make scheduled full backup of all servers, on monday first incremental run to same media set "daily", and when tuesday is last day of month i do full backup of all server to media set "monthly", BUT next incremental backup is affected by this full monthly scheduled backup.

this was only small example, i had in backup exec 2010 nice structure of maybe 7 mediasets, and arund 17 backup jobs.

thanks for any advise how to solve this.

Hi all,

We have a Backup Exec 2010 server running alongside Exchange 2010.  Both are fully patched.  We backup to LTO3 Tape using an external Quantum Tape Drive.  

We are in the process of migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010 and as part of the process we are testing backup and restoration of individual mailboxes as well as the entire IS.  

Upon attempting a restore of a Mailbox (~60MB) made using a GRT Backup we noticed the staging process was increasing to a huge amount (We eventually stopped it at 5GB) and came to the conclusion that BEX was staging our entire IS.  Now at the moment this is bad enough as our 2010 IS weighs in at 100GB plus a 10GB Catalog; however we have yet to finsih migration and our 2003 IS comes in at 400GB and so to have to stage 400GB+ of data just to recover a Mailbox which may be under 1GB in size.  

What options do we have to speed up this process?

All input appreciated, if I have missed any critical info please let me know.

but I have other Questions with "folders not in catalog"

 

 

In path v:\archive\* i have thousands folders -they have numbers name.

From this folder after backup to tape I was deleted any folders from v:\archive\*

I have about 20 job with backup all folders from this path. These jobs will be even more.

In search catalog in BackupExec 2012 I not see all folders names have numbers when I put path "archive\" and select "Find directories only". But when I put additionally specific date I see missed folders.

I need a solution

I had some problems due to firewall settings when trying to add a specific server and pushing out the BackupExec agent to it. Got the firewall setting cleared up and appeared to have successfully pushed out the agent to the server but the server isn't showing up on the list.

The event log is showing this error that seems to have been documented in tech article TECH186464

I need a solution

Hi all, having a bit of a problem with a scheduled nightly backup.

Almost every night, it errors with the following:

This is very strange, as the backup fails 80% of the time, but sometimes it works, and when it works the backup is 100% successful.
I have tried using several different accounts, all with the same issue, below is the resource credential check, which passes.

I need a solution

I have a tape drive that's displaying "in use" but there is no tape in the drive or job running. I've restarted the services but no luck. I've rebooted the server but still showing as in use. I've deleted the tape drive, remove the current drivers...rebooted the server and reinstall the drivers but tape drive still displaying in use. I am using backup exec 2010 R3 and the tape drive is a Quantum stand alone. Any ideas?

Hi,

We are having one exchange 2007 server with multiple storage groups and database, a total of 1.8 TB data and I am using backup exec 2010 R3 SP2 with all patches. Initially the job rate was more than 3 Gbps and jobs sucessfully. Very recently the backup job rate has reduced to 1Gbps and the job is taking more 24 hrs to complete hence backup jobs is getting cancelled due to timeout.

Kindly provide some solution if any one have

I wonder if somene had this problem.

I have uppgraded our backupserver to BE2012. Earlier version was 12.5 On this version (12.5) i had a fine running SQL backup and sql translog backup.

When creating same job again on BE2012 the credentials fails for SQL server. The credential is the same as i used on 12.5 where it worked just fine. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try? I have tried making a new account for backup SQL server with same rights, but its the same error. If i make a normal backup of the c:drive its no problem. Just SQL that gives the error

Dear All,

Sine about two, three weeks, I have been experiencing a weird issue: The scheduled jobs start. but then at random times and random servers they just stop running. Don't fail, don't stop. Just hanging at some source and don't do anything. The only thing I can do is to kill the engine as cancel does not work. This is a big problem as when the job decides to stop at one of the first machines, all other devices below are not backed up.

Restarting the server did not work. No errors in the log either.

We run BE 2010 R3.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi

I have upgraded to Backup Exec 2012 and want to backup a file server. Disk to disk.

The amount of data I need to have backed up will vary between 8 og18 TB.

My backup server has 24TB capacity. As I understand it is recommended to use the full backup and incremental in a cycle.

Because of the amount of data, I would never get the opportunity to have two simultaneous full backups on the backup server. To delete a full backup to make room for a new full backup means that the data will be unsecured the time it takes to make a new full backup. Not a good solution.

 

What is the best practice?

My goal is daily backup of the file server and keep the data three months after the original files have been deleted from the file server.

Should I have an other version of BackupExec? Have previously used BE Continuous Protection Server.

Hi,

Scenario : My data is in two tape tape1 100% full, tape2 few data is there. Now my second tape has been over written, which contain the catalog too, However, my tape1 is safe.

Now would like to restore the data, but i am not able to generate the catalog.

When i select view by resorce and i can able to see the structure as i am having the xml and FH file in catalog directory.

Kindly suggest to restore data which is in tape 1.

I get error message when backup performed if i select VM for backup in one folder and than move it (VM) to another folder. So every time i need to move VM to another folder, i need deselect it from one place and than select in another. Is there is a way how i can bind to specific VM with some name and make Backup Exec to find her in new location ?

I'm running BE 12.0 and was able to manually backup the BEDB_DAT.MDF via the following two methods:

METHOD 1:
1) Open CMD prompt
2) Type:   OSQL -L   (enter)   This will provide a list of SQL instances
3) Type:   OSQL -S [instancename] -E -n -Q "BACKUP DATABASE bedb TO DISK = 'c:\symantec\bedb_backup.dat' WITH INIT, SKIP"

METHOD 2:
1. Launch BEUtility at C:\program files\symantec\backup exec\beutility.exe
2. Click "All Media Servers" and locate the media server in question
3. Single-click the media server, in the right pane
4. In the left pane, scroll down to "Database Tasks"
5. Click "Check Database Consistency", then "Compact Database", then "Dump Database"
6. In the same folder as BackupExec's bedb.mdf, you should find the BEDB.BAK

I need to be able to at least set the default storage device in a pool, and better yet, to be able to load-balance multiple NAS devices.  I sure hope this is added to any future service packs in BE 2012.

I need a solution

Hi. 

I have 5 servers that backup to tape nightly, each on their own job. SRV1 thru SRV5 backup to TAPE01 thru TAPE05. I have a long history of the job for SRV4 backing up sucesfully but I need to restore a single file and when I restore, that server is not in the list of options. I see SRV1, 2, 3, 5 but not 4. I have gone through all my tapes and its the same. Re-catalogued them and nothing. I have gone back in the jobs to verify that it is writing data and there are some 350 files and 50gb of data. 

Not sure what other options i have here.
