I need a solution

Everything I have read and seen says the wrst thing we could do is backup the vm like they were physical servers.  That being said I have done that and it works, but it is not the long term solution to my problem. This is all that I see.  Right now I only have 1 vm running in my cluster.  Raisers Edge is the name of the vm that I am trying to recover files from.  I can restore the entire VM and I can restor the vhds.  But I have nothing at the file or folder level inside the vm.

Space required for snapshot in Hyper-V

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a query.

I have the following:-

1. BE 2012 on Win 2008 R2.

2. Hyper-V Host server on win 2008 R2.

3. 7-8 number of VMs running on each Hyper-V host server.

My query is how much free space is required for taking snapshot backup of hyper-v in the remote Hyper-V Host server.

Is there any thumb rule or its a  just the space of the VMs (all files ) is occupid.

Given a situation a backup of 2 TB for 3 VMS has to be taken, kindly clarify how much of free space is mandatorily required on the host server.

Thanks

BE 2012 Unable to restore individual mailbox in Exchange 2010

I need a solution

When trying to restore an indivudal mailbox everything is empty in the selection list (see attached picture) under the "Microsoft information store". Backup are ok every day.

I have moved everything over to Exchange 2010 from 2007,  and before when i tried to restore from Exch 2007 it worked fine.

I have the Exchange server in one AD domain and the BE 2012 server in another domain but I have truste between them.

I have also tried to install Exchange 2010 Management tool in on the BE 2012 server but that does not help.

If I try ti do an restore of the whoel mailbox databse, I can select it (but have not tried to do a restore) so it seems that it is only problem with restore of the individual mailx or item.

I have GRT enable on exchange agent settings.

I have updatated BE 2012 to latest SPs.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem ?

Thanks in advance

How to prevent client to enter standby mode while backup exec agent is active?

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm using BE 2010-R3 Rev. 5204 on my Win2K3 serve and same for BE-Agent ob my german Win7 64 bit machine.

How can I prevent that Win7 enters standby mode while a backup job is active? Ok I could reconfigure the client to not use any energy saving setting but this is not a solution, just a work arround. I thought that BE-Agent should be smart enough to handle this itsself.

I read a thread on creating a pre-/post-backup script but don't know how to do this (possibly power script). Unfortunately the solution was not posted to this thread.

Thanks for nay help,

Stefan

Backup Workstations Using Symantec Product

I need a solution

We use Symantec back up exec 2010 to back up our servers, but is there an option to back up certain workstations also? Right now I have windows xp back up utility set to back up certain users software data folders that is on their c drive set to back up to their my docs (which we have pointing to a backed up fileserver). I am new to back up and I did not set up back up exec 2010 that we use for our servers. What does Symantec offer as back up options for PC's that would make backing up and restoring easy or easier than using windows xp back up utility?

A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Hi All,

So we've had the same backups running for a few months now, then suddenly over the weekend they start to fail with the errors below. These backups include our domain controllers and Intranet, our other seem to be fine. I've gone through a lot of the Symantec knowledge base and have had no success.

Things I've tried:
(1) Restarting both the backupexec server and file server.
(2) Enabling Advanced Open File with forcing it to use Microsoft's Shadow Copy Provider.
(3) Ran "vssadmin list writers" which found 0 errors.
(4) Manually started the shadow copy service on the client server.

Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide. I'm not really sure what could have changed in our environment that would cause certain backups to fail suddenly.

BMR Restore from Recovery CD Fails: "The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding."

$

I need a solution

I am attempting to perform a BMR restore of a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit server using the 64-bit recovery disc. The server is virtualized in an ESXi 5.0 (without Update 1) host. The Backup Exec 2012 server software is running at the latest version, Service Pack 1a, with all updates installed, on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit server.

After selecting from last Friday's full backup, and having already inserted the tape required to do the restore, the backup will connect to the server and begin running. Trust is established, and a temporary machine name like "minint-2a9j4kx" displays in the list of servers on the Backup Exec 2012 server.

The status on the server I'm attempting to restore to shows the backup is running, but the progress stays at 0MB. Eventually the backup fails with the error, "The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding."

At that point, if I try to restart the services on the Backup Exec server, the restart process will time out with an error that the service is taking a long time to respond. If I reboot the server, the services come back, but if I try the restore again, the problem reoccurs.

Faulting application bengine.exe

I need a solution

Over the past 2 days, some of our backup jobs have been failing. This has been due to the Backup Exec job engine service not responding. Further investigation has found that at approximately 9pm, the following error is logged in the Event logs:

Faulting application bengine.exe, version 14.0.1798.105, time stamp 0x4fa3de72, faulting module bengine.exe, version 14.0.1798.105, time stamp 0x4fa3de72, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00000000003f1c8b, process id 0x1200, application start time 0x01cd97aa031f9564.

After which all jobs scheduled after this time fail and are put on hold.

In the mornings, I start the job engine again, remove the hold on the jobs, and they go through to succeed. I need some direction to identify the cause of this issue.

Tihaem

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi Guys, Im getting this message (not error) for all my VMs when backing up:

Note: Resource: "VMVCB::\\vcenterserver\VCGuestVm\(DC)Datacenter(DC)\vm\SERVERNAME" is not snappable. Attempting to back up directly from the source volume.

Firstly this is reported against ALL my VMs and not just SQL and Exchange as most searches I found mentioned.

I guess Im just trying to understand why more than anything else. This isnt an error or causing any VM backups to fail. It works absolutly fine!

Im using BE 2012 SP1 with HF 1897571,180964, 194470. Utilizing the AVVI agent with GRT and GRT for Exchange and SQL. All my remote agents are updated to the latest version. Target is to dedupe using SAN transport.

Here is an form the job log:

Family Name: "Media created 10/11/2012 6:00:07 PM"
Backup of "VMVCB::\\server.domain.com.au\VCGuestVm\(DC)Datacenter(DC)\vm\SERVER
Backup set #1 on storage media #1
Backup set description: "Colo Prod Servers -VMs Full and Incremental with Full Monthly Duplicated to Tape-Weekly Full"
Backup Method: Full - Back up virtual machines
The option to enable the restore of individual files and folders from a virtual machine backup was selected for this backup.
The Agent for Windows must be installed on the virtual machine to use Granular Recovery Technology to restore data.

Backup started on 10/11/2012 at 10:38:34 PM.
Backup Set Detail Information
Media Label: IMG004058
GRT backup set folder: \\.pdvfs\SERVER\2\BEData\STHVMDK\IMG004058
Transport mode 'san' was used for the disk 'SERVER.vmdk'
Backup Exec has discovered and protected 'C:' on virtual machine 'SERVER.rocla.com.au'.
Backup Exec has discovered and protected 'D:' on virtual machine 'SERVER.rocla.com.au'.

Like I said It doesnt appear to be a problem, backups work fine as do restores but if anyone could shed some more light on it that would be great for my own peice of mind.

thanks!

File name length

I need a solution

Our previous program (was not a symantec product) that we used to back up our files only allowed a certain amount of characters for a file name. This included folder, sub folder and the files contained inside. Therefore, if a file's destination name was too long, it wouldn't be backed up.

Is this the same with symantec?

Backup Exec 2012 Browse failure

I need a solution

Hi all,

I'm new to using Backup Exec 2012 and am in the process of trying to edit/create a Backup job

I'm on a Read only domain controller where I had Backup Exec installed before it was Read only as per required

While on the Home tab, going to create a backup I get straight away

Browse Failure

Failure to browse to 'xxxx.xxx.xxx'

Failed to log on to Microsoft Windows.

Ensure that your logon credentials are correctly entered and that they meet the following minmum:

- member of Backup operators group

- have the log on as batch job privelege

The acutal account I've used to login is a domain account and was used for BackupExec 2010

My question is is that when it looks at the logon account when accessing the server where does it see it as having those priveleges?

Thanks
