Does Backup Exec 2012 Incrementally dedup a VM and its' application database Exchange 2010?

I need a solution

Hello!

Goal I want to achive:

I want to be able to use the VMware Agent to perform a Full backup of a guest Exchange 2010 VM to to a dedup folder and then I want to make Incremenatl backups of the VM (and of course of Exchange) to that same dedup folder.  This is ideal solution b/c in disaster I want to be able to restore the entire VM or B2V or B2P it to dissimilar hardware.

Media Server Configuration:

I have the VMware Agent installed and can see my ESXi Server in the Backup Exec (BE) 2012 console.  I also have the Windows Remote Agent and the Applications and databases agent installed on the BE Server.

I was told that I should not make Incremental VM backups from the Exchange 2010 VM Full backup which also resides in the same dedup folder.  This was recommeded not to do, b/c since the VM backup is using applicaiton level GRT it will cause errors when trying to mount the Full database backup to compare against when doing the incremental.

Is it possible to do make Dedup Incremental VM backups of Exchange 2010 Servers?

If I cannot do it to dedup folder that is fine, I'll just send both VM backups (Full and Incr) to a non-dedup folder and achive the same Goal, but I'll loose the ability to dedup.

Please advise,

-Steven

"Spare Disk Area" Issues

I need a solution

Hello,

Our server is a Windows Server 2008 with Backup Exec 2012. I am consistently getting the following errors:

"Backup Exec attempted to automatically reconfigure the newly discovered disk storage device for use, but the reconfiguration failed with the following error: Physical Volume Library Database - duplicate key or index."

This is in relation to a 'Spare Disk Area' in the storage tab of Backup Exec. This spare disk area points to a location called F:\BACKUP which contained a backup from 2010 that was set to never delete. We no longer needed this backup and so from the storage tab I went into the spare disk area and deleted the backup. There are no jobs or backup sets within this 'spare disk area.'

I wish to delete this spare disk area; because we don't use it anymore and the error messages are annoying (I don't like error messages :) ). So I did the following:
1. Right clicked 'Spare Disk Area' from within the storage tab and choose 'disable'.
2. Right clicked 'Spare Disk Area' from within the storage tab and choose 'delete.'

I then recieve the following error: "Unable to delete the disk storage. Catastrophic Failure." Now I don't like error messages but I dislike 'catastrophic failure messages' even more.  I'm also getting this error in backup exec:

"Backup Exec was unable to initialize and communicate with the device Spare Disk Area [FIXEDB2DDevice 1.00] (Unspecified error)."

I can't seem to find any event logs or any other relevant information. I appreciate any advice or assistance on what I can do to delete this 'spare disk area' and stop these error messages from happening.

Thanks,

Installing BE2012 on a Windows 2008 server that runs SQL Server 2008 as well.

Which method do you recommend to install BE2012?   Using the existing SQL installation,  or using BE's  SQL installation?

What are the pro's and con's of each?

Append additional backups to a removable disk

I need a solution

I"m using BE 2010 on a Windos 2011 SBS server (Windows 2008).  I'm using a USB disk to do periodic Archive backups.  The disk has the capacity to hold serveral of these archive backups.  The first backup to the disk goes fine but when I try to add an additional backup to the disk I get the error "e0000f16 - The operation failed to acquire the minimum number of drives and media needed.".

I have created a media set named Archive and have the overwrite protection period set to 1 hour and the append period set to 1 hour.  The Archive backup job uses that Archive media set.

What do I have to do to make this backup disk appendable?

How to back up SBS 2011 in Hyper-V

I need a solution

I'm building out a new Small Business 2011 server using hyper-V and I'm trying to understand how to properly install Backup Exec 2012 sp1. I have purchased the premium Small Business Server license that allows me the main SBS server and an extra Windows 2008 R2 server. I have one physical host with the extra Windows 2008 R2 server running as a hyper-v host only. It has 2 VMs, one is the SBS server and one is the extra Windows 2008 R2 server (Microsoft lets you use the extra server license for 1 host and 1 guest).

I have purchaseda  Backup Exec 2012 small business edition license and a licence for the small business edition agent for Windows.  When I began to install Backup Exec 2012 on my hyper-v host, I entered my license key but the licensing page said that the hyper-v agent was unavailable. Given that, I'm not sure how to backup the guest VMs.

How do I do this?

Thanks!

Best practices for Backup Exec 2012 with vSphere 5.X

I need a solution

I have a completely virtualized environment running vSphere 5.X. Even the vCenter server is virtualized (new for me).

What is the best practice for Backup Exec setup in an environment like this? Run on an existing VM (such as a file and print server that has direct access to a large volume of data), or run a separate backup VM with BE installed?

Any issues with snapshots in either of these configurations?

Backups will likely be written to a dedicated backup appliance like the Dell DR4000 (essentially a NAS device) that "hangs off" BE.

What do you use if you have a similar enviroment, and why?

Job Canceled only for incremental stage duplicate.

I need a solution

I have a two jobs that been running fine for a few weeks, one for each of our soon to be new Domain controllers. They are weekly full with daily incremental, I have a full selection of all data to backup. The duplicate stages for the full runs fine but the incremental fails every night with:

The job was canceled because the response to a media request alert was Cancel, or because the alert was configured to automatically respond with Cancel, or because the Backup Exec Job Engine service was stopped.

Nothing is set to cancel nor do i see any services stopping.  I recereated a job from scratch with the same issue.  I have tried to change whats backed up, same issue.  I have searched online and tired many "fixes" or suggestions but none seem to help.  I checked our hardware backup device. an ExaGrid solution and  the job completes and both Deduplication and Replication are successful.  Only changes I that I made when the error came up is I installed DFS (Distributed File system) on the servers and added some shares to the backup.

I am using BUE 2012 with all the latest patches, etc.  Both servers and the media server are W2k8 with updates.  The Exagrid has their most recent firmware too.  I have a thrid W2k8 server backing up to the same shares without issue, and 6 more servers backing up to other shares on the Exagrid fine.

Thanks -- Joe

Hello

I am new to this company. Their back up system seems strange to me. It looks like they are backing up several things for no aparant reason. Here is the situation.

They have tap back up and image backup. They run full tap back up every week. Image back up creates image of all servers. I have been told that image back up saves C drive only. No data is saved. Just OS and programs. Now full weekly back up saves these images also every week. What I am wondering is that why we need to save full images on tap every week. I think it should be enough if we only do lets say once a month.

Can someone put some light here regarding best pracices done outside.

Thanks

I need a solution

Current setup: Server A + LTO3 autoloader + Symantec Backup Exec 12 Ver 12.0 Rev 1364 + multiple agents.  Have 5 sets of LTO3 tapes with backped up data.

We want to decommission this setup and bring in a new setup.  The new setup will be "Server B + LTO5 autoloader + Symantec Backup Exec 2012".

  1. What are the proper steups to decomission BackupExec 12 and the old agents?
  2. What steps do we take to ensure the new setup can read and retreive data from the LTO3 tapes?

Any assistance will be appreciated..thanks! :)

Clarification needed for media/job setting (Append) and large jobs

I need a solution

I've inherited our backup solution (BE 2010 with Dell Tape drive+autoloader) so I'm not fully trained/versed in the configuration of the system. I know how to create/modify jobs, swap tapes, etc but I've been encountering an odd issue lately. When we have a large job run that requires more than one tape, I've noticed that the job status will change to Queued and the message that appears is "Please insert overwritable media into the robotic library using the import command." If I check the media status I can see available media with Appendable Until - Infinite - Allow Append and these tapes have available space. My questions are as follows:

1. Why doesn't BE insert the next tape if it's available to be written to?

2. Are backups not able to span multiple tapes?

3. If the available tapes have some data written but are still able to be appended, are these excluded from the above scenario?

4. Where is the Import command that the message is asking me to use?

I've attached some photos below that may help illustrate my issue. Hoping someone can shed some light on this! From what I've been able to search, I don't really follow the answers that are given. Some of the nomeclature used is beyond me.

I need a solution

Hi all,

I am upgrading my backupexec from 2010 to 2012, in 2010 version we had a job template with schedule diary incremental that backup only monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. In this job template we except friday, saturday and sunday of a week.

In 2012 version, as I could see, must exclude each day manually.

Is there any way to exclude all saturday and sunday for this job?

Thanks.

backup exec 2012 disk storage

I need a solution

I've a backup server someone else set up and it's running server 2003 SP2 and BEX 2012.  It has 3 2TB drives in it... 2 of them are set up as backup to disk storage drives.  the one that is being used for the nightly backups keeps returning warnings about low disk space, yet it has 600+GB free space.  How do I tell it to expand to fill the rest of the disk?  The drive is dedicated to B2D functions so there is no reason for it to not use the other 600GB.  I've tried searching for info on this and only turn up people trying to free up space instead of use up space.
