Backup Exec 2012 reports no longer working after update

I need a solution

Hi.

I am running Backup Exec 2012 on a Windows 2008 R2 Server with the following updates

Service Pack 1

Hotfix 189571

Hotfix 180964

Hotfix 194470

Hotfix 199866

Hotfix 200433

Hotfix 201596

Hotfix 205111

We use the report "Backup Size by Resource", so as to monitor increases / decreases in data stored.  As from yesterday the procedure of running the report through the Backup Exec 2012 GUI generates a blank report.

Running the command Get-BEReport -Name "Backup Size by Resource" | Invoke-BEReport -Path c:\report.html through the BEMCLI generates the report correctly, but this is not something that I wish to be doing each day as it is a faff.

Are there any known problems with running reports after applying the latest updates?

I have checked for further updates today, but none are present.

Are there plans to repair the damage done since the updates were applied?

Many Thanks, Clive.

What to make of my licensing situation?

I need a solution

Can anyone help me make sense of my licensing situation? I recently lost our IT partner who provided my Backup Exec and the know how behind it. Just looking to upgrade to 2012 to get at the ehanced backup to disk options to mitigate tapes getting full!

We bought Backup Exec 2010 OEM with 12 months support and an additional agent to cover A Small Business Server 2008 Premium environment. The support has now expired but whilst it was running I got the 2012 upgrade license keys but never deployed it. Considering renewing the support on it but need to get a budget approved first.

Current environment is as follows:

  • 1 x Small Business Server 2008 running SharePoint, Exchange 2007, Active Directory & 2 x SQL Server Express instances for Backup Exec and an anti-virus product.
  • 1 x Windows 2008 with SQL Server 2008 (as provided by SBS 2008 Premium License).
  • 1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 web edition running 1 SQL Express 2008 R2 instance (this is not currently covered by a backup exec agent).

My questions are:

  1. Even though the support contract has run out am I still elegible to install the 2012 edition?
  2. The license assesment tool acknowledges that we have Backup Exec 2010 Small Business plus an agent. For some reason it says we are not in compliance because we need licenses for SharePoint, Exchange and 2 x SQL server licenses. This cannot be corrrect. Is this a concern?
  3. We originally bought Backup Exec 2010 OEM + 1 agent license. In my licensing portal I have an entry for Backup Exec Small Business Edition 2012 plus two agents. Does this mean I can now cover my third server?

Sorry if these questions are a little straightforwardly obvious. I have to deal with my company's IT all on my own so any opportunity to "bounce off" someone else to make things clearer is much appreciated.

ports and directions for BackupExec through firewall

I need a solution

I am trying to get firewall rules approved for a BackupExec 2012 server to backup servers behind a firewall.

I have configured BackupExec to use 25 ports, and submitted the firewall request to have those ports opened to the appropriate machines.

Articles I've read do not indicate a direction.. or indicate bidirectional, but our security team is concerned about implementing bidirectional access because the servers being backed up are on an externally available network, and the backup server is on an internal network.

Can someone answer definitively if the random ports are required only outbound (backup/media server to client agents), inbound (from the clients to the backup/media server), or in both directions?

Thanks in advance.

These are really incremental backups (I've checked in jobs history).

Is there an option to turn in BE in order to make Exchange seing the 'truth' ?  :)

Thanks in advance,

Trtying to re-use a tape, I imagined I could retire it then wipe it, this didn't happen so I thought I'd delete it and re add it, this doesn't work and now I can't get the tape to show up.

Any way to do this?

Closed partition (to WORM Netapp) cannot backup

I need a solution

We use Backup Exec 12 with the EV agent.  And have the backup completed.  However we receive the critical status daily that we have 33,752,648 savesets that have not been backed up or replicated.  When looking at the backup of the vault store, I see that the "Last items secured:" = "No backup detected".  Furthermore "Last scan started:" = "Never Started".  So even though all the save sets are written to our Netapp and tagged read only by EV and then replicated to disaster site Netapp we appear to be a critical risk.  I'm not fearing that are data is at risk, but I would like EV confiured correctly and not have to stare at "critical" errors every day.  Since we've closed that partition, the new partition is acting the same way.  No backup detected and scan never started.  I know that WORM creates issues with backup of the data as far as archive bit being set.  Any help would be appreciated.

Backup Exec with Dell PowerVault

I need a solution

We are using Symantec Backup Exec 2012 (version 14.0) running on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit PowerEdge server.

We are looking to add a Dell PowerVault NX3200 to our environment and configure it in Backup Exec as disk storage for backups. Has anyone used a PowerVault NX3200 with Backup Exec before? We are finding limited information as to the compatibility (specifically with Symantec's de-duping license) between the two. We are also curious if anyone has been able to utilize the multiple NICs in the PowerVaults. Would Backup Exec take advantage of teaming two or even four NICs together to achieve higher throughput with backups? How was the configuration process for you? Was it worth the extra configuration/hardware costs?

Thank you,
Mike

General question about backing up\restoring Domain Controller from VMDK

I need a solution

Hello,

Just curious how others are backing up their virtualized Domain Controllers keeping in mind that you may have to perform a restore from a previous backup.

Are you using the Backup Exec Agent, just backing up the VMDK or both? I cant think of any reason that i would have a need to restore from the file level as our DC's are serving no other functionality.

I did find an article on restoring a Virtualized Domain Controller so it almost appears that there would be no reason to use the Agent.

Any feedback, thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Steve

Backupexec 10d

Thank you all in advanceI have a win 2003 server sp2 x86 (32bit server)

It has Backupexec 10d loaded. I will be upgrading to the latest backupexec once I find my product license key folder.

The question is the server also has MS SQL server 2005 loaded. Does Backupexec need this SQL install. I didn't build the server so I need a clear answer.

Does BackupExcec use it for anything.

I use this server as the main backup server which has our tape drive connected, so it backs up itself and 3 other remote servers within the same cabinet.

When I go out to the SQL Server config manager window i see SQL SERVER Configuration Manager\SQL Server 2005 network Config\Protocols for BKUPEXEC......is this SQL server needed. Is it part of the BAckupexec initial install, can I delete this instance of the 2005 SQL server as it represents a big security hole in our scan.   thank you!!

Backup Exec 12.5 intermittantly hangs on back ups/byte count stops

Running BE 12.5 rev 2213, all updates installed. Byte count on both the tape and hard drive have not incremented in a day from 200,800,142,622 (bytes). This happens from time to time. A reboot of the server usually fixes it. I restarted the BE services with ServicesMgr.exe and same thing happens. No media alerts to remove a tape (as per this thread). Tape drive is an HP LTO Ultrium-2. I read someone upgraded their SAS controller driver but I'm not sure if that'd help me.

Files missing from selected folders in BE 2010 R2

I need a solution

I have been experienceing an issue where some files in a given folder (this happens in many locations) will not backup while others will.

There are no exclusions listed in either BE or ntbackup. Seems to happen without any identifiable pattern. I am able to go and manually backup those missing files if I choose to do so, but they do not backup in the normal job.

Reoccuring error to catalog media

I need a solution

I have this really wierd situation.  Whenever I attempt to restore data from a tape, I get this message to catalog the media first because it does not exist in the catalogs.

The LTO5 tapes I am using are relatively new.  They were imported, inventoried, and cataloged when I installed them.  Several of them have been written to at least twice by now.

I did some research for solution and came across TECH16628 and followed it's instructions.  I will note that there is one step the author forgot to mention, so here is a quick recap of what I did using the author's instructions plus my addition:  Under the Media tab, I moved the tapes to Retired Media set.  Deleted the tapes.  Under the Devices tab, I inventoried the tapes and re-cataloged them.  For the 5 LTO5 tapes I had, the process worked "Successfully."

Unfortunately, when I attempted to retry the restore from one of the tapes, again I got the infamous you-need-to-catalog-this-media.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can resolve this situation?

I am using BE2010 R3 on a Dell Windows 2008 R2 server with a RAID and TL4000, which has an internal LTO5 and LTO4 tape drives.

Any suggestions/help to resolve this problem is greatly appreciated!
