Running BE 2012 on Windows 2008 server.

Just did a restore of a complete backup and now I want to do the differential.  Chose my last differential and it says 10.5 gb were backed up. 

Choose restore, files folders or volumes, file and folder backups,

I Resource view find the date and time of the backup I want to restore

Here is where it gets strange.    It shows ALL my folders and subfolders and all are unchecked.  It won't let me proceed until I check something to restore.  Shouldn't it only have what's been backed up since the last full and not everything??  How do I know what to choose?

My customer recently purchase a new spanking hardware running Windows 2012 server, and since their environment are using BE for quite some time, opted to purchase the BE2012 for their new Win 2012 server without realising the BE2012 is not supported on Win2012 server.  Furthermore their new server is running Exchange 2013 for their mail server and at the moment are in full production mode, without proper backup plan since BE2012 is not supported on the W2012 server.

I have successfully installed a trail version in a Windows 2012 server using a custom install with sqlexpress 2008 R3, but haven't try the backup and recovery yet. Since the beta program has been closed, my question is when Win 2012 server will be supported and how to get it when it is available.

I have a scenario where i need to do a full backup each night of a server to tape (LTO4), the server runs a database which has thousands of tiny files associated to it, which slows the backup down massively, and is taking nearly 24 hours to run. i have optimised the backup as suggested in other posts, but need a proper solution.

Would running two jobs side by side backing up the database files to disc, then backing up the backup to disc- to tape work? if so how would this impact recovery?

does anyone have any clever ideas other than incremental backups?

I'm trying to set some duplicate job templates up to duplicate backups to tape on the 1st of every month. Here's what I have set up right now:

Selection Lists

• Databases - various SQL databases (2000/2005/2008)
• Email - the mailbox database on our Exchange 2010 server
• Files - various files on a number of Windows servers

Policies

• Databases - Full B2D every day
• Email - Incremental B2D Mon-Thu, Full B2D Fri
• Files - Differential B2D Mon-Thu, Full B2D Fri

Ideally, I'd like to run a tape backup on the 1st of every month with a duplicate of a Full backup... I'm not sure of the best way to do this though... Maybe schedule for Fulls to be run on the 1st regardless of what day of the week it is?  Can someone make a suggestion?

I have the error below on a newly created BE 2012 server (we scrapped the old one, and are now setting up the new one with all new jobs etc):

The machine being backed up is a Windows 2008R2 file server with the BE agent installed. It is running on a VMware host but we are not using the VMWare BE agent.

The BE server is also a 2008R2 server with all latest updates applied.

- Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "\\EUROPA\System?State". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

V-79-10000-11234 - VSS Snapshot error. The maximum number of snapshots for this volume has been reached. Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) will not allow any more snapshots.

I have had a look around and can't seem to find too much info on how to fix the problem.\

By the looks of it, the error is happening on most of the drives on the machine.

We also use ShadowProtect on this server, and have done since it's creation with no problems up until now when re-creating the BE jobs - maybe I havent got the job setup correctly?

Any ideas?

Good day, I work with Backup Exec 2010 R3 want to make a differential backup to Exchange 2003. The problem that the option to backup differential mode there is the option Differential-Logs. The after a full backup next backup is a differential-logs. The differential Backup only backs up a logs, in restore an individual mail box (GRT) almost impossible. Can you help me in this situation, how can I do a differential backup full database - Logs in Backup Exec 2010 R3 at exchange?

Hi all, ok I am going to try and put across the situation and requirements and see if anyone else has been down the same route and has answers to the problems I have been through

Setup

2 x Server 2008 r2 tinboxes

1 x SAN connected via SAS to the tinboxes

On each tin box is hyper v and clustering; all standard roles added from server 2008 r2

The tinboxes are able to see one volume for a DC and 2 volumes for clustered shared area and quorum they are clustered and are running 3 highly available VMs

I have installed backupexe (Trial) on tinbox 1 and the agent on tinbox 2

Situation

I have backed up the local server with a full disaster recovery and the local vm = success

I have backed up the clustered VMs = success

I have then done a full disaster recovery restore of tinbox 1 and tinbox 2 onto identical hardware, these restores are successful to a degree, the OS restores and the server fires up and you can log in, the Hyper V services don’t start and fail with a “cannot find file” error, this is resolved by removing the hyper v role and re installing it, then the hyper v services work.

I then noticed the drive with the VM DC on it hadn’t restored, (although the restore said success) It did however create the folder structure.

If I then do a restore of the DC VHD from the backupexec software I can then get the local DC hyper V running,

First question why do I have to uninstall the hyper v role and reinstall?
Second question why did the DC VHD / VM not restore?

I then try and restore the clustered VMs and am unable to do this as the c:\clusterstorage\volume 1 folder says access denied, I look at the Cluster Manager and the cluster doesn’t show, Note: the Cluster was at least visible before I had to remove and add the hyper v role.

So there you have it, I would love some suggestions as to what I am doing wrong, with regards to the backup etc,

For the local tinboxes I am backing up everything, allowing for sdr this means the c:\clusterstorage folder is ticked but it doesn’t back this up, I have also got the hyper v server (DC) ticked and being backed up, additionally the drive which is holding the DC VHD is also being backed up.

I work on a restricted site so can’t reply to any questions etc instantly but would love anyone’s input

Previously i've installed MS SBS 2011 as a guest virtual server onto a MS Hyper-v box. I've installed Backup exec  (12.5 and above ) for MS SBS onto the host (since usually the guest cannot see the tape drive) and Backup exec has allowed this as part of the product licensing for Symantec Backup exec for Small Business Server.

I've just started an install for a similar setup but i wanted to put the backup software onto a dedeicated backup server (server 2008 r2) and only backup MS SBS 2011 )installed as a guest OS under Server 2012. However on completion of the install Backup exec 2012 seems to have gone into a 60 day trial mode. Is this scenario no longer supported does anybody know ?.

Backup written on USB disks. 5 disks wich were changed every day. One disk has enough space for 1 full backup.
Seperate job for every day
Retention periode 4 days

I already searched in the internet and contacted Symantec Licensing Support but did not get consistent information so I am hoping I find my answers here.

# First of all - To backup a VM via vCenter, do I need a Windows Agent License. When a Windows Agent is not installed I get a warning message after running the backup indicating that GRT is not possible withount an installed windows agent.

# What credentials do I need to enter for the windows server I am going to backup, the VMWare Administrator or the server administartor? I tried both but get the error that authentication is not possible.

I started backup, its getting fail with below error, but logon credentical test is getting successful. any one guide me.

Can someone explain this to me:

Read single block mode
Select this check box to have this device read only one block of data at a time. If this check box is selected, the device will read a single block of data at a time, regardless of the size of the buffer block. Symantec recommends selecting this option if the device is a shared storage device.

Write single block mode
Select this check box to have this device write only one block of data at a time. Selecting this check box provides greater control over the handling of data write errors. Symantec recommends selecting this option if the device is a shared storage device.

I have 1 robot that has 4 drives. 3 drives are assigned to one device pool and 1 drive to another.

One device pool (FILERS-A) is configured to backup data  (CIFS shares) from 2 netapp controllers that store most of the data for many servers.

The other device pool (FILERS-B) is configured to backup data (UNIX shares) from a seperate pair of netapp controllers. that store most of the data for a Oracle Server.

So in the above case, do I need to enable read and write single block mode at the tape level?

Just a little confused about what it means when it says "if the device is a shared storage device"....

Hello everyone.  I’m new in this forum, and would like some assistance to upgrade my company’s Backup Exec 12.5 SP4 (32-bit) media server to the latest Backup Exec 2012 (64-bit).  What I’ve proposed to management is to perform a fresh install of Backup Exe 2012 (64-bit), on a new physical server running Windows Server 2008 Standard R2.  What I need some clarification on is how to perform the following:

1.  Migration of encryption settings to the new Backup Exec 2012 media server for restoration.  The encryption is set on the current job policies.  I also have the passphrase information. 
2. Migration of job history, and catalog data to the new Backup Exec 2012 media server.  My company is required to provide historical job information to auditors on a yearly basis.

I will be recreating the backup jobs, and configuring the default setting on the new server. 

Any assistance is much appreciated.

One of the small features I miss the most in Backup Exec 2012 is the ability to highlight some information in the UI, and copy it to an Excel document manually. I know it sounds like a small issue, but there are times when I want to pull some specific tapes from my library and there is no easy way to do that now. The custom report feature is a joke, and it would take me 10x longer to build a report or use a command line to copy out what I need when it's a specific collection of tapes or other information.

So what will it take to have Symantec add this small, but useful feature back into the product? Let me be able to hit CTRL-C on an it, and give me Tab delimited text date of what was copied. Very frustrating!

I'm looking for a best practice solution.  We maintain our data locally for a period of 6 months.  Any data past 6 months is sent away for offsite long-term storage.  I backup the .bkf files for a particular month to tape.  The files are then removed from the storage device and the tapes are sent away.  Is there a better, more efficient way to do this or are we doing it the best way?

I have an issue with backup exec backing up a file server very slowly.  It is a vm machine sitting on a vmware environment with about 30 other vms.  All other servers from this enviroment are backing up in the 1500MB/min range while this one cannot break 350MB/min.  I have attempted everything that I can think of that would contribute to the slowness.  Here is what I have done:

Recreated the job

Removed the backup agent

Shut off AOF

Checked network, memory, and cpu utilization during back up, in which none of it is being over utilized.

Have copied large files from the file server to the media server and speeds are decent, at least faster than what the backup is doing.

I have disabled Anti-virus, shut of indexing, and have used different tapes.

There is much more that I have done, but cant of all of it at the moment as I have been troubleshooting this for a while.  if anyone has suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Also the server does have a lot of files and folders, but not anything out of the norm for a file server that would make it creep this slowly.  I have another vm server that has a ton of small wav files that it backs up and that server backs up really quick. The amount of data that I'm attempting to back up is only 140 GB.  Its taking 7 hours!

I have downloaded the Backup Exec 2012 "all editions" ISO - BEx64-DVD-1798.17a.HF1c.SP1a (this is what gets downloaded when you follow the V-Ray trial edition link).
When I try to install V-Ray, I only get the following options:

* Backup Exec 2012
* Agent for Application and Databases
* (Maintenance) Agent for Applications and Databases
* (Maintenance) Backup Exec 2012

There is no V-Ray option and I haven't been sent a serial number by e-mail.

Can anyone help?
