Life Time of Dell LT05 Tapes on Backup Exec 2010

I need a solution

Hi Folks,

Recently I have been receiving this error E00084C7 and my backups are failing. I was dealing with dell for support as the tape loader was giving read/write errors, the solution they provided was to change the tapes.

I changed the tapes 8 months ago and the problem is back.

In the past 8 months each tape has backed up 23.8TB's, can someone please tell me if these tapes should last longer or advise a solution that will resolve this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Backup Job Fails When Run From Schedule, Succeeds When Run Manually

I need a solution

Hi

I have a problem with Oracle job. The job used to run smoothly over the last couple months, however, after recovering from a long catastrophic power failure, we noticed that Backup Exec had a problem with the Oracle job. The rest of jobs are fine, and complete successfully with no errors.

I tried to edit the backup selection, and noticed that the Oracle instance was unavailable and displayed a message about wrong credentials, I retyped the username and password again (sys) but it didn't accept it, so I thought of restarting the remote agent service, and that worked, the Oracle instance status is now Open, and I was able to browse the tablespaces and archived logs. Now I wait until the next backup schedule, the job starts and runs for a about 90 minutes, then fails.

I went to the job log and I could find three different errors, the first two errors are under the Set Information \\oracle\D: an they are as follows:

The first one is

WARNING: "\\oracle\D:\folder1\file1.ext" is a corrupt file. This file cannot verify.

Unable to open the item \\oracle\D:\folder1\file2 - skipped

Unable to open the item \\oracle\D:\folder1\file3 - skipped

..

etc

Directory folder1\ was not found, or could not be accessed.

Nonve of the files or subdirectories contained within will be backed up.

V-79-57344-33967 - The directory or file was not found, or could not be accessed.

The second one is

V-79-57344-65033 - Directory not found. Cannot backup directory \folder2 and its subdirectories.

V-79-57344-65033 - Directory not found. Cannot backup directory \folder3 and its subdirectories.

V-79-57344-65033 - Directory not found. Cannot backup directory \folder4 and its subdirectories.

...

etc

The third error is located right after the Set Information - \\oracle\D: and before the Oracle-Win::\\oracle\instanceid in the job log, and it is as follows:

V-79-57344-34108 - An unexpected error occurred when cleaning up snapshot volumes. Confirm that all snapped volumes are correctly resynchronized with the original volumes.

The job log, however, doesn't show any error for the \\oracle\C:, Oracle-Win::\\oracle\instanceid, or \\oracle\System?State.

I noticed that the Event Viewer on the Oracle server shows the following errors/warning (please notice the timestamp):

EventViewer-System-Warning-24.jpg

then

EventViewer-System-Error-35.jpg

then in the event viewer application category:

EventViewer-Application-Error-57481.jpg

I tried to search all over the Symantec TechNotes and that didn't help.

so I tried to run the job manually to monitor it, and to my surprise, it ran successfully with no single error or warning.

I waited until the next job schedule and it fails again. I run the job manually once more, and again it is a success.

Why does the job fails with the previous errors when it runs automatically, and completes successfully when it is run manually?

Any help is much appreciated.

I need a solution

Hi,

untill 2 years ago we had a bed practis of using multipel tape for one backup job, we have a tape library and we have a full backup job, when we ran this job once a month the data wouldn't fit on one tape so the rest of the data writen to tape 2 and next month full backup the same data wouldn't fit to the current tape 2 and the rest of data goes to tape 3 and next month to tape 4. we stop this practics. and now each full backup has its own tape.

now I have 4 tapes with above story, and I want to reuse the first 2 tapes. I want to be sure if I need to restore data from the tape 3 and tape 4, still I can do so. I heard this is possible but then I have to catalog each of the last 2 tapes again with the option Use storage media-based catalogs is not selected.

is this correct?

Unable to decide which B2D folders belongs to which R2BD media

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a customer who uses BE 2010 R3 and we are having trouble associating B2D folders to the Removable Backup to disk folder. It is only possible to see which B2D folders are online when a backup is taking place and even though the cartridge for the RD1000 is present the folders won't come online until the backup starts. Is there any other way to see which folders are associate with what cartridge?

I also wonder if someone can explain to me why Backup Exec assigns multiple scratch media to a backup job instead of writing to one scratch media at a time and then assigning the next one? I wonder because there are several B2D folders that I put in scratch media and when the backup started i noticed that a lot of folders have only written circa 4 out 20 GB. This applies to 6 out of 18 B2D folders.

As you probably can tell my experience in Backup Exec is somewhat limited and i apologize if something is confusing

Thank you for your help!

Restore fails

I need a solution

Hi People,

I have backups running to tape and disk-to-folder each evening.

Backup Exec 12.5

On Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition, 64-bit

These appear to be working OK but i am now attempting to restore a mailbox and i receive the following message:

Job ended: 23 July 2013 at 13:56:21
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource.  Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.  If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932

I have been through all the articles that link refers to with no success.

I have been able to carry out a simple file restore from the the folder that I am putting backups into so I am happy that the server can get access to the area in question.  However, when I attempt to restore anything regarding mailboxes nothing works.

I also ran a debug and got:

Error 10: Invalid device

Any ideas would be appreciated because once again, symantec has failed to live up to expectations.

BackUp Exec 2012 Lizenzinstallation nicht möglich auf Windows Server 2012

I need a solution

I need a solution

I need to install Hot Fix 161270 on my Dell DL2200.  I'm installing the x64 version (be5204R161270_x64bit) and after rebooting, shutting down BE services, and running the executable, I get "Configuring Symantec Backup Exec.   Please wait ...", and it has not completed in over an hour.  This is the second try.  I need this fix to address two problems ("Duplication job might write data to not only the specified target device but to a different available device as well" and "Backup Exec 2010 R3 remote agent servers do not show up under Favorite resources in the backup selection list").   How do I install this hot fix?

vmware alternate restore from BE2010 to BE2012 environment

I need a solution

Hi All,

As subject above, I have few concerns since I'm not able to perform alternate restore on the vmware:

1. Production running BE2010 while DR running BE2012. Can I perform alternate restore since the ver is different? Do I need to perform cataloging/import the image from tape?

2. The production backup using vcenter to backup while the DR use ESX to perform the backup. Since the backup method is different, does the alternate restore is doable at DR site?

3. The restore button/option is blur and I'm not able to hit/click on it, seems is the option is not enable for the ESX machine. How I gonna perform the restore?

Thanks in advance.

De-duplication Advice

I need a solution

Hi!,

I am just implementing BE2012 Media server. It is licenced for the required agents and De-Duplication. I'm not quite sure on how backups are configured when using De-Dupe. I've configured normal jobs using BE before but never used De-Dupe. I'm sure it's just a terminology thing so please humour me.

The server has 16GB RAM & 2 local drives. C:\ (Operating System) and D:\ (RAID 1). The D drive has around 1TB of storage space. There is also a 7TB iSCSI drive from a dedicated NAS device (2 Gbps LACP), call this E:\.

Within Backup Exec I am setting up the storage but am unsure as to how the D:\ (1TB) drive and the E:\ (7TB) should be setup.

Which should I use as the De-Dupe drive, larger or smaller?

Do I configure all the backup jobs as De-DeDupe backups using the De-Dupe drive? Should I be avoiding normal type backups?

Thanks in Advance!

Appending data to a tape media

I need a solution

I'm having the followin problem:

Platform:

BE2012 on Server 2003 x64

Servers being backed up are all Win 2003.

When running a full backup job and one tape media is completed filled up, the backup job will stop and ask to insert scratch media, even when there are other tapes almost empty and set to append. Only when I insert a scratch media the job will continue. And it doesn't matter either which "overwrite media option" in the backup exec settings. So I tried both options; "Overwrite scratch media before overwritting recyclable media......." and "Overwrite recyclable media contained in the targeted media set....."

This is bad because I'm wasting a lot of tape drive space = money.

Any help on resolving this issue would be appreciate it.

thanks

BE 12.5 Linux agent disconnecting with backup server

I need a solution

I receive the following error message with a backup job that I have scheduled to run daily:

Backup- server.server.com

V-79-57344-65072 - The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled.

There are four servers being backed up with this specific job.  Two of the servers are backing up correctly.  Two of the servers are failing.  Both are Linux servers (CentOS 5.5) and were backing up fine for 3 years until three weeks ago when they suddenly started having this issue.  The backup agent on the Linux servers is running.  I tried uninstaling the agent and reinstalling with no success.  I ran the backup with debugging on the backup server and on the Linux servers without anything concrete other than the connection between the backup server and the client server drops before any data is transmitted (but the agent will still be running on the client servers).  Any suggestions?

Backup Exec - incremental Jobs

I need a solution

Hi All,

I have an issue I am trying to get to the bottom of.

I currently use Backup exec 2012 to perform a full Backup, followed by a number of incrementals over the month on 5 separate shares.

all the shares are of sim iliar size and location. The full backups take an equivalent amount of time ( 6 hours) and the incrementals for all are 10 minute jobs, with very little data. Except one drive which always has a very large incremental (80 gb) .It is consistent, every incrememntal is much bigger than it should be.

If it happened once I would put it dfown to a member of staff moving files to a new location, but on a regular basis it has me confused..

Any thoughts?

Liam.

I need a solution

Hi

I have BE 2010 R3 running on a Windows 2003 64 Bit server. I am planing to upgrade the BE to 2012. But prior to upgrade, i wish to make something similar to restore point in case something goes wrong. Sins it is a 2003 server, it does not have any system recovery option there. Is there a way within the backup exec server itself to create something similar prior to the upgrade? Any help is appritiaceted.

In regard to that, i wish to know how i can successfully revert back the process in case it is needed due to some issues i might experience. Would appriciate if someone could throw some light on this. Thanks.

Which is, in English, the equivalent to

Note that Supports are configured with 3 hours overwrite protection and Infinite - Allowed append.

I do not understand why it fails :-(

Backing up small files with BE 2012

I need a solution

I have to backup a servers with a a lot of small files. As expected the backup speed is very slow when backing up such files. I would like some suggestion on how to improve the backup speed of these type of files. Right now the backup speed for that server is about 105 MB/min. So it takes more than 2 days to do a full backup of less than 1TB, and it is becoming an issue because by the time the backup is completed the data is already old.

I've thought about synthetic backups, but I will need to buy the Enterprise Server Option license for that, and I'm not sure if this is going to work well since I've never tried with any BE version. And symantec no longer lets you try it free.

I'll really appreciate any sugestions.

Thanks
