Restore tape from BE 12.5 using 2012

I need a solution

I am evaluating BE2012 and had to recall year end tapes from 09 that were done using BE12.5   I was able to inventory and catalog the tapes, a restore said completed successfully but no data was restored.  I have anopther system running BE2010R3  and that was able to inventory, catalog, restore, and the data was recovered.  Why would 2010R3 be able to recover data but 2012 did not?

Kopiesicherung möglich?

Hallo,

Danke

I need a solution

I'm getting an alert on my backup that says, "Please insert overwritable media into the robotic librarty using the import command."

My job is set to keep data for 4 weeks.  When I go into my media set for keep data for 4 weeks I have a tape that's overwrite protection period is overwriteable.  Any thoughts on my BE isn't picking that tape up and writing to it?

*Note: all my other tapes are still within their overwrite protecion period.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Catalog of B2D folder log shows "Backup set may not contain any data"?

This backup set has already been cataloged.

This backup set may not contain any data.

The above 2 statements are seen hundreds of times in the log from a Catalog Job (actually Inventory and Catalog) run on my permanently attached 6tb disk storage device in BE2010 SP1a+.

Can anyone tell me what they actually mean and should I be concerned or not?

Thanks,

We just purchased some additional BE 2012 Agents (3x Agent for Applications and Databases) for our existing BE2012 environment and I cannot figureout how to install these out to some of our already Agent for Windows managed servers.

We have 1 media server and 6 agent managed servers. I need to add the new agent for Apps and DB's to some of the agent managed servers.

I have already added the license to the media server and it shows as installed / activted.

Can someone help on this?

Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup error

I need a solution

I am running an Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 R2 and trying to backup my Exchange databases with GRT with Backup Exec 2012 with all of the updates installed. Some of the backups will go through just fine. Then others will give me this error:

Final error: 0xe0000393 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information.

Then when I look in the logs I find this: Backup- \\ADVORLEXCH01.INTERNAL.ADVREF.COM\Microsoft Information Store\General Mailboxes

V-79-57344-915 - Unable to complete the operation. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: '-1022 There is a disk IO error. '

Backup- \\ADVORLEXCH01.INTERNAL.ADVREF.COM\Microsoft Information Store\Administrative Mailboxes
V-79-57344-915 - Unable to complete the operation. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: '-1022 There is a disk IO error. '

This was supported to be fixed in Backup Exec 2010 so why am I getting this from time to time in 2012?

And this is just one of the issues I am having with the Exchange backup.

Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup error

I need a solution

I am backing up my Exchange 2010 which is on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Full backups seem to be succeeding with GRT turned on. However, sometimes on my incremential backups I am getting this:

Final error: 0xe0000393 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information.

Then below that in the logs I see this for two databases being backed up:

V-79-57344-915 - Unable to complete the operation. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: '-1022 There is a disk IO error. '

Not sure why.

Slow SharePoint restores

I need a solution

Hello,

I'm trying to formulate a disaster recovery plan for our SharePoint environment. So far the solution I have works, but the restores are extremely slow (150-200MB/min).

Here's my setup:

  • SharePoint WSS 3.0 installed on a W2K3 VM
  • SQL 2008 SP2 installed on a physical W2K3 box
  • BackupExec 2010 R3 with SharePoint agent installed on physical 2008R2 box

And this is my DR plan:

  1. Recover VM using VRangerPro
  2. Install new SQL instance onto an existing Server (different to the live one when we're at our DR site)
  3. Create SharePoint and BackupExec SQL logins
  4. Restore Web Applications with the SQL redirected to the new SQL instance using the SharePoint Redirection options
  5. Restore Config DB - again redirected to new SQL instance

Now, this process does work, however step 4 takes forever! I have about 10 Content DBs in 1 web application - in total about 115GB. Backup Exec will restore the DBs back to the new SQL server with a Job Rate of 3GB/min but as soon as the byte count hits the expected size for that DB the job just seems to hang. Looking on the SQL Server the DB is in a '(Restoring)' state. If I leave it alone for longer enough the job eventually completes and the DB is restored, but I don't know what it is doing or trying to do for the majority of the job! The eventual Job Rate ends up at 200MB/min, meaning my 115GB restore takes around 10hrs to complete - not great.

I've tried many different options but nothing seems to make a difference.

Has anyone had a similar experience to this? if so I'd greatly appreciate your assistance.

Thanks

Jack

Symantec Back up Exec NDMP question / EMC VNXe 3150 or VNXe 3300

I need a solution

I  want to back up either VNXe to the media server(backup server) and then to tape, I understand that this can be done using three way support. I also understand that single file restores can happen using this method but what I need clarification on is whether or not I can select single files on the VNXe 3150 or VNXe 3300 and back only that up if required.   There is no documentation that suggests we can’t but I do need a firm answer if this is possible or not.

Thanks

The operating system is MS Server 2008 R2. I've looked to see if there is a VSS update for this version of the OS but there isn't one I can find. I've also tried the suggestions in Support and so far nothing has corrected this issue.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks!

Which is Better for Backing Up Clients?

I need a solution

We have several xp and 7 workstations that I would like to back up select files. Right now we have scheduled windows back up to weekly back up these folders but I would like a better way to do this.

I have read some about Symantec DLO 7 and we also already back up our servers with back up exec 2010 and have read how I can get 1 RAWS agent per workstation and it will back up select files.

What is the difference between the two? Do they both allow us to select files to back up? What advantage does one have over the other? Im thinking since we already are using back up exec that the cheapest thing to do is just purchase RAWS for additional workstations we want to back up. Any info I'd appreciate.

e00084f9 communications error has occurred - not previously discussed

I need a solution

Hi all - I see there are alot of questions about this error - but I couldn't find one that was similar to mine.

ISSUE:

  1. Backupexec server OS - Server 2008 R2 Standard
  2. Exchange 2k10 Server OS - Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
  3. Exchange 2k10 Server SP1 is being used.

A few days ago we upgraded BE 2010 r2 to 2010 r3

I have now getting the above error almost every night. (e00084f9 communications error has occurred)

I have verifed the Exchange management console versions are the same. (per suggestions of one solution)

One search for the error code sent me to the following page - but the settings suggested here are already our defualt. So that's not it.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH50454&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1351792264528

Now - in full discloseure - I am also getting a "insufficient disk space" when a duplicate job from GRT to Tape runs - but this is AFTER the above error, so I'm assuming it's related (I am using an 8GB tape - and never fill it over half way on a typical incremental backup)

uh.. .Help???

slow backup of VMWare servers

I need a solution

I have two VMWare ESXi 4.1 hosts, and am backing up the guests to tape on a physical server over a 1 Gbps line. The guests are all on direct attached storage. A couple weeks ago the backups on one host began to crawl. For example, a 20 minute backup now takes 5 hours or so. We are using Backup Exec 2012. This problem only occurs for the guests on one host, whereas the other host is completely fine. Both servers use the same switches. The server that is slow to backup is able to host the VMs without any problem at all, and the vSphere client displays no errors or anything other than "normal" for the hardware status.  Any idea what could be causing the problem?

Backup Exec SQL Express Database Full

I need a solution

We are running Backup Exec 2012 fully patched, and we back up about 20 servers to a single media server using deduplication. The media server is standalone using all defaults and SQL 2005 Express. After we upgraded from 2010 to 2012, there seemed to be a large amount of older historical data (Job History, Backup Sets, etc.) that never seemed to get purged out over time. I finally took it upon myself to begin manually deleting the very old backup sets through the management GUI. This worked fine, for a while. Then, unbeknownst to me, the SQL database went from about 30MB to 4GB in a matter of a few weeks. The table that filled up appears to be the dbo.BELog table, although there may be others that have grown as well. I am assuming that this is due to Audit Log settings.

So, anyway, I thought I would simply Export my Configuration Settings and create a new database file, but NO, the Export function has been removed from the Backup Exec Utility, at least for non-CASO. I have tried to clear the audit log but attempting to access the log or log configuration produces an “unknown exception” error, probably because of too much data. So now I am trying to figure out how to purge data from the dbo.BELog table but not being a SQL guy, I’m having no success. Installing full SQL is not really an option and I would rather not create a new database. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. A screen shot of the SQL table properties is attached. Thanks. Randy

Change Hot Swap Disks

I need a solution

Hello - Can someone tell what the proper way to change hot-swap disks for rotating backups. Is there something I need to do within the symantec software, BE 2010, to "safely remove drive"?

I realize this defeats the the purpose of the term hot-swap, but we are using one CRU datport hot swap drive bay rotating 3 hard drives for our backup. I just took over for a previous admin, so I didn't set this and I'm not very familiar with BE.

The reason I ask is that I've just been pulling them out and switching them, but I;ve had 2 drives showing up as corrupt and it makes wonder if I can't just remove the drive without unmoutning it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Symantec Backup Exec 2012 cannot find tape drive slots

I need a solution

I have just upgraded to Symantec Backup Exec 2012 on Windows Server 2008 with a Dell 124t Autoloader.

The tape drive can be seen by Windows Device manager and Backup Executive, but it cannot see any of the slots. There are tapes loaded within the machine, and I have tried cycling power, updating the driver, stopping and restarting BE services.

I used to use a Version 10d on Windows Server 2003 with no issues.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Modifying selection list on differential jobs

I need a solution

Let me start by saying I'm a BackupExec novice...

I'm having an issue where I encounter the follow error message in BackupExec 2010 R3:

V-79-57344-775 - Microsoft SQL Server supports only full backups of the master database.  Diferential and log backups are not supported.  Consult the SQL documentation for more information.

The solution is clear.  However, when I deselect the master database from the selection list of the differential job, it is also removed in the full job.  How do I go about removing a file from JUST the differential job and leaving it intact as part of the full backup set?

Thanks!

PV 114X drive goes offline in Backup Exec 2010 if media is not overwritable

I need a solution

I am using Backup Exec 2010 R3 to backup servers using B2D2T.  The tape drive is a Dell PowerVault 114X LTO5 drive (using the Backup Exec drivers) and  whenever the a tape is not overwritable, Backup Exec issues a Media Insert alert as expected but does not eject the tape and after a short amount of time the drive appears as offline under the devices tab and another alert is issued to state that the drive is offline.

I can only eject the tape and bring the drive online again after cancelling the job, restarting the Backup Exec services and then restarting the tape drive (the tape drive is connected by a SAS connection).

Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris
