Infinite Backup

I need a solution

Hi all, have a question, how can I create infinite backup of my active directory server that would create a full back up job just once on the first run, then followed only by incremental backups? I have 1TB usb drive and a full back up job takes approx 300GB in Server 2008 R2 + 2010 BE R3 environment. Since the data amout stays always around the same level on our servers and flactuates only by +/- 10Gb to have infinite incremental backups would make sense I believe. Thank you!

I need a solution

Currently I'm running into an issue where my Dedupe directory that is constantly in use. Reboot the box, in use, it's been this way through 2 reboots and 4 days causing our backups to fail and other backups to become queued. Is there any way to track what is currently using the Dedupe directory? I see that the spoold task (PureDisk Content Router) is utilizing 1-10% of the CPU and about 5GB of memory so I know it's being used but by what I'd like to know.

Server specs:

E5410x2 (2.33GHz quad cores)

64GB RAM

Dedupe directory 14.9TB RAID10 on a Dell MD100

Job hangs with the following warning: "Please Insert Media by Creating an Import Media Job"

I need a solution

I'm trying to run a backup job to a robotic library that has the following media lables

  • MEDIA001
  • MEDIA003
  • MEDIA004
  • MEDIA005

Medai 1-5 have all been assigned as 'scratch' media and all the tapes have been erased.

When I kick my backup job off, the job status goes to 'Queued' and then I get the following warning

"Please insert media "MEDIA098" into the robotic library by creating an Import media job.  If the media does not have a bar code, click Options on the Import Job Properties, and select 'Auto-inventory after import is comleted'

I haven't used the "MEDIA098" for several months so there should be no reason why Symantec Backup Exec is requesting this media.  I am NOT trying to write to this media.  I tried stopping/resarting all Backup Exec services hoping that it would flush out whatever memory it had of "MEDIA098", however the job is still requesting to import "MEDIA098".

Out of frusteration, I tracked down MEDIA098 and went ahead and imported it, hoping it would resolve the issue, but Backup Exec is STILL requesting this media even after importing.

Please help!

Getting low throughput for NDMP backup jobs.

I need a solution

Hi Experts,

In our backup environment we are using Backup Exec 12.5, we are facing low throughput (Job Rate) issue for some of NDMP jobs, Filer is EMC celerra.

In the Window Events we are generally see the events ID:33152, Adamm mover Error:Get Drive info failure, Error= ERROR_GEN_FAILURE for some drives. while checking the drives we are able to see all medium changer & Tape Drives with proper HP drives.

We are using HP MSL4048 G3 Series Tape Library with LTO4 tape drives & medias.

Could you please suggest me how we can increase the throughputs for NDMP jobs. And which drivers we should be installed on Tape Drives- HP or Symantec?

Due to low throughput its taking a very long time to be complete or some time we need to cancel the jobs as we cant run the job in business hour.

Any suggestion or help will be greatful for me...

Thanks in advance...

Backup Exec 12.5 Restore SQL server database to an instance that doesn't exist

I need a solution

Good Evening all,

Long time searcher first time I have had a problem that I couldn't find the answer for.

I have had to restore a very large SQL database from backup and I have sent it to a different server as I can't place it directly back over the top as it is a very active database (luckily I only need a few non-active tables from that database as a whole).

That said I was going through the options and realised some 7 hours into the restore that I accidentally sent it to an instance rather than a specific database. I'm loathed to cancel the job now as it is half way through however I don't want to get to the end and find I can't access this database somehow. So if I am better off cancelling and starting again then thats a pain but i will do.

Once the restore is complete will I be able to access this database even though it is sent to an instance that doesn't exist?

I have checked the network traffic between the servers and there is definitely data flowing between the two I just can't find the file(s) that are open on the recieveing server to try and verify that I will be able to get the data.

Any help is much appreciated.

Backup Exec 12.5, Windows Server 2003, SQL 2005 if it makes any difference.

(And yes we are in need of some software updates!)

I need a solution

Hi Fellow Forumers.

I just want to clarify something in Symantec Backup Exec 2012.

Backup Jobs are running after 2 hours it was failed. Stating that Agent for Windows is not started. My colleague incidentally stop agent for windows and forgot to start the services.

My Questions:

1. Is that normal it tooks 2 hours before the backup fail?

2. Why isn't the error occur during the backup started?

Need some explanation on this. Thanks very much.

Hello!

I have Server CASO (BKP-003-SVR) & managed media server (BKP-004-SVR) Backup EXEC 2010R3

I changed the NDMP ports to 9000 Server SQL-002-SVR .

When I add the server (SQL-002-SVR) to the 'Favorite Resources' to Server CASO, server is not added.  When I add the server (SQL-002-SVR) to the 'Favorite Resources' to managed media server, server is added.

BackupExec 2012 on Small Business Server 2011 - Sharepoint Resources vs. Farm Backup

I need a solution

I recently set up BackupExec 2012 SP1 Small Business Edition on a Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition for a small company of <5 users. After installing SP1 and the latest hotfixes the backup started to complete with exceptions (which ran fine before) stating that severel databases and database files couldn't be backed up because they belong to SharePoint and would need to be backed up using the BE SharePoint Agent. At the same time the SharePoint Server Farm started showing up in the BE Servers view.

I'm aware of the Forum post https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/backup-completed-exceptions-sharepoint-server-farm-components and several others concerning this issue and I already did several things:

- Create new backup job for the SharePoint farm selecting a full backup
- Remove Sharepoint Resources from server backup
- Remove SharePoint databases from SQL Agent selection lists
- Remove Sharepoint database *.mdf and *.ldf files from drive C: selection lists

but the backup still completes with exceptions (not to mention that deselecting those files disables SDR for the server !?).

I know that by the end of July SP2 for BE 2012 is supposed to be released which hopefully adresses this issue but my questions are:

1.) Will SP2 also be available for the Small Business Edition of BE2012 ?

2.) Will SP2 address and finally solve this issue ?

3.) Since I only have this one SBS server, do I need to backup SharePoint using the Server Farm node or can I simply delete the Server Farm and use the local SharePoint Resources in the main server backup selection (which was running fine before installing SP1 and hotfixes AND would only need one single job to do it) ?

Any help/information/experiences would be appreciated ...

Hi guys,

I would like to know if the either VMware vSphere 5.1 or Hyper-V 2012 is supported (officially) with either of the latest versions of Backup Exec and Netbackup.

This is for a proposal to a client that currently does not have an enterprise strategy that will support virtualization.

Thanks

I need a solution

From a risk assessment perspective, I need some assurance that 3x physical linux servers are being backed up.

Our admins tell me they use backup exec to do this, which I am very new to.

I need some assistance on obtaining the following information:

1) how to see what is configured to be backed up for those specific servers (i.e. which volumes, how often, where the backup file is being written to)

2) and then how to get some form of log file that shows successful/unsuccesful backups for those systems over say a month period

3) any logging/monitoring enabled, that would inform the admin were the job to have failed, where would this be configured?

Can you give a bit of an idiots guide on how to get this information, ideally with screen shots?

Many Thanks

VMDKs at root of Datastore (vmWare ESXI 5.0/5.1)

I need a solution

Hello everybody,

we have a problem to backup VMs in our Cloud. We are using Citrix CloudPlatform running on vmWare ESXI 5.0/5.1 hypervisor. The major problem is, that Citrix CloudPlatform store some linked VMDKs of the VM on the root of the datastore.

Our Backup Exec 2012 Media Server can not backup the VMs.

This is the Error:

Sichern- VMVCB::\\10.90.2.11\VCGuestVm\(DC)REALCLOUD(DC)\vm\i-3-331-VMV-79-57344-38290 - Ein Versuch zum Überprüfen eines Datenspeicherpfads schlug fehl.

The linked parent of the disk '[RCBLNSAN02-VMCLP-Vol01] ROOT-331-381-000001.vmdk' is at the root of the datastore.

I know that Backup Exec can not backup VMDKs which are stored in the root. It is impossible to move the VMDKs into subfolder because Citrix CloudPlatform crashes.

The other option is to make a backup directly from the LUN. We have HP LeftHands P4500.

So is their a way to make backups directly of the LUNs?

Thanks and best regards

I need a solution

We're having issues backing up the boot (C:\) and data (D:\) partitions on one of our Oracle DB servers (Windows - non RAC).  I can backup the Oracle database and the system state via Backup Exec just fine.  The job is failing when it attempts to process the individual volumes.

I've tried creating a separate backup job and selected a subset of individual files on the boot partition but the job still fails.

The job log simply states:

Resource Name:  \\ServerName\C:
Error:  e000fe09 - The directory is invalid.

I've opened a support ticket with Symantec on the issue, but it's been languishing for about 2 weeks.  I'm hoping someone from the forums has come across this issue and can recommend a viable solution.

removing SQL databases

I need a solution

Hi everyone.

In my Backup Selection List I have a number of SQL Server databases being displayed.  2 of these databases; Microsoft SQL Server "BLACKBERRY" and Microsoft SQL Server "SQLEXPRESS" are no longer valid databases (Blackberry Enterprise Server has been uninstalled), yet they persist in the backup selection list and generate an error when the backup is run (I don't know why as neither are selected).

I have opened the SQL Server Management Studio Express and confirmed that neither database exists.

I have checked the Services and can see that only 3 x MSSQL$ databases exist, none of which are BLACKBERRY or SQLEXPRESS.

Can anyone tell me how to remove non-existent SQL databases from the Backup Selection screen/window?

Hello,

I am using backup exec 2012 to back up to disk.
I know that there is a system called DLM and it will deleted the expired backup set.

Can I use the command line interface to get the list of which .bkf are going to be deleted by DLM ?

Eg:

B2D000001.bkf        (expired)

B2D000002.bkf        (expired)

B2D000003.bkf        (Not yet expired)

B2D000004.bkf        (Not yet expired)

Then i want to get a list which tell me B2D000001.bkf & B2D000002.bkf are going to be deletd.

Thanks!

We have an SBS 2011 Server with SSR 2012 installed, which writes images to the "Backup Server" each evening, which are then transferred via BE2012 to tape. We have also purchased the "Application and Database" Agent so that Exchange can be additionally backed up on the SBS. Using BE on the Backup Server, we remotely installed this agent on the SBS.

Problem: How do we configure BE to now backup Exchange on the SBS? We can't find any options within BE to select the SBS and Exchange. Any tips on how to configure BE to remotely backup Exchange would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Oliver
